• Luckily all the funder systems are the same… • And the grant requirements too!
• … not
Academic Burden UK - Infrastructure
• University Systems (RMAS/CRIS/ERA)
• Funder Systems • Je-S ( RIFS), GtR, Researchfish • FlexiGrants ( eGAP) • REF • EPSS, NIH, …

RMAS architecture
Simon Kerridge, EARMA 2012, Dublin, 9th July 2012
• Initial Framework available to use (March 2012) • Moving to full RMAS-CERIF compliance (March 2013) • Pathfinder work has shown that:
• Use of Framework saves £35K per procurement (or £14K) • On going efficiency examples:
• Proposals: £60 per application • Post Award: £70 per project per annum • Outputs Management: £70 per academic per annum
• Ability to exchange and reuse data • Estimated £375K per annum for a University like Exeter

Possible NRII Approach
6 Jul 2016 Efficient infrastructure for UK research – from http://www.slideshare.net/JISC/closing-plenary-john-wilkin-and-david-maguire 8
The Advantages
Government-related Bodies / Research funders
HEIs Researchers
• Scalable, flexible research reporting/ management
• Richer and more reliable source of information
• Record and analyse research across the research base
• Improved data quality and reliability
• Better benchmarking and business intelligence
• Simpler submission of REF return

Government-related Bodies / Research Funders
HEIs Researchers
Effort to secure mandate for early delivery of light touch central UK RIS Investment to build the infrastructure
Interface local systems and central warehouse Procedures for data exchange and governance
Potential greater scrutiny from University
What would this mean for REF 20/21?
» Avoid slump-spike cycle » Reduced costs of submission » Improve openness, transparency
and accountability » Permanent research record » Greater access to REF data » Facilitate development of
national priorities

Academic Burden UK – All Solved
• Erm… no
• Although we have Jisc… • It does not bring all the high level stakeholders
together… in one place, at the same time
• We now have CASRAI-UK ( more tomorrow) • A great opportunity to make a difference • Need to learn from the FDP model • We have a HEFCE VfM driver
• The timing could be right
• The stars may be aligning
