The Garlock® ValveCompanyIn 1947, we became the first companybesides DuPont to process Teflon®
PTFE fluoropolymer for industrial sealingapplications. Since then, we’ve earnedrecognition as a leading manufacturer ofproblem-solving products for the chemical process industry.
We began manufacturing valves in 1967,when we introduced the Gar-Seal® valve, the first PTFE-lined butterfly valve. Itssuperior performance in service with themost aggressive and corrosive fluidsstems from our in-depth experience withPTFE and innovations in industrial seal-ing. Over 30 years of continuousimprovement have made Gar-Seal® themost reliable and cost-effective lined but-terfly valve available anywhere.
Customer FocusedOur approach to valve design, proof testing and manufacturing is customerdriven, straight-forward and friendly. WeCustom-Craft our products by workingtogether with plant maintenance andengineering to develop new design concepts and proof testing approachesthat result in increased valve reliabilityand reduce the cost of ownership ofPTFE, PVDF, UHMWPE, lined butterflyvalves in all types of pipe systems.
Assured ComponentQualityBecause we have a full range of plasticsprocessing capabilities, we are able tomake all of our valve components inhouse. Therefore, we have complete con-trol over production variables, specifica-tions and quality. Based on our experi-ence in manufacturing valve linings anddisc coatings, we select the best-perform-ing types of PTFE, UHMWPE, PVDF andmolecularly enhanced PTFE resins.
Expert Liner and DiscCoating SelectionGuidance:We’ve always helped our customersselect valve materials that will solve theirmost difficult application problems. Wehave customers across many industries, including chemical processing, semicon-ductor manufacturing, pulp and paper, steel and pharmaceuticals. Thanks to ourfocus on satisfying all of our customers’needs, we’ve been rewarded with oneof the largest installed base of linedbutterfly valves in the industry.
Gar-Seal® Valves – NowAvailable With Teflon® NXTWith new DuPont fluoropolymer technol-ogy, Teflon® NXT delivers all the chemicaland thermal capabilities of conventionalPTFE with enhanced permeation resist-ance and lower creep. Molded surfacesare inherently smoother and non-porous.With their unusual thickness, a designfeature that helps fight permeation, Gar-Seal® PTFE liners and disc encapsula-tions take full advantage of lower perme-ation with Teflon® NXT. With reduced sus-ceptibility to permeation, valves can lastlonger for reduced cost of ownership.
Innovative Flange-Mate® SimplifiesProper InstallationThe Gar-Seal® Flange-Mate® design usesgauge rings mounted on each of the valveflange surfaces. These rings provide acontrolled mounting gap and stable bolting surface between the valve andmating flanges. They also automaticallycenter the valve in the piping. Flange-Mate® helps prevent cracking of FRP pipeflanges and damage to valve liner due toflange rotation or over-compression.

Heavy Duty Valves StandUp to Tough Applications: Durable liner walls Our valves are manufactured with a minimum wall thickness of 0.125 in. (>3 mm) at all media contact areas.
High permeation resistanceOur proprietary high-pressure moldingprocess helps eliminate micro-voids,porosity, laminations and inclusions thatallow permeation. Our advanced technol-ogy for plastic liner and disc encapsula-tion help eliminate defects that can occurwhen other manufacturing methods areused. We closely control sintering tem-peratures for PTFE to produce a highlycrystalline and dense polymer structurethat resists permeation and abrasiondamage.
Assured Lining and Encapsulation Quality
Every Gar-Seal® disc and liner is subject-ed to a demanding 50,000-volt spark test.100% testing for defects helps assuretrouble-free service. Other manufacturersmay test at a lower voltage.
Robust Stem Design to Fight Shearing
Our single piece valve stem and the mostrobust valve disc in the industry worktogether to virtually eliminate disc orstem shearing. Stems are made fromhigh-grade 17-4 pH stainless steel. Youwon't find our valve disc somewheredown the process stream.
Positive ShutoffOur disc and stem arrangement providestrouble-free rotation and assured shutoff.Depending on valve size, stems aresquare in cross section through the discor double keyed inside the disc. Thisdesign provides for a stiff disc and shaftassembly that virtually eliminates bendingand seal distortion. A common problemwith other constructions that employintegral stem and disc configurations.
Rigid Shaft Support Protects Stem Seals
Stem seal support is critical to stem sealintegrity. Our shaft bearings are heavy-duty Garlock DU® PTFE -impregnatedbearings. Multiple bearings at the top andbottom of the disc provide rigid supportfor the valve shaft, thus eliminatingdestructive side load distortion of thestem seals. Our seals won’t burp due topressure surges or dynamic flow characteristics.
Blocks Fugitive Emissions – Even After 10,000 Cycles
Our proprietary "live loaded" stem seal-ing system is a combination labyrinthseal, compression seal and rotary seal. This field-proven seal is machined to fitbetween the disc and liner. Whether atsteady state or cyclical temperatures, ourseal has been proven to meet and exceedEPA guidelines even after 10,000 cycles. The entire unit is double-loaded with ourstandard Viton® fluoroelastomer or special-order Kalrez® perfluoroelastomerO-rings in combination with our PTFEseal energizer backup-ring. See diagram below.
Withstands Aggressive Environments
An updated design prevents atmosphericincursion that can cause internal damage.A seal of Viton® is mounted on the topportion of the valve shaft and precisiondie-cut Gylon® gaskets seal the bodyhalves. These sealing components havebeen tested under extreme conditions toinsure top performance.
TraceabilityA unique serial number on each valvebody guarantees traceability. At any time, this number tells a customer that the valvehas passed our strenuous in-house quality
assurance tests.Using thenumber, we can provideinformationabout thevalve’s compli-ance withnational andinternationalstandards.
MaterialsThe GAR-SEAL valves are available in five different corrosion resistantmaterials. Discs are available in differentmetal alloys, too. For all operatingconditions a combined quality and safety level is achieved.
