Lets Learn About Water!Demonstrating Surface Tension
What you’ll need: • Plate • Water • Pepper • Dishwashing liquid • Cotton bud
What’s next? 1) Pour some water onto a plate.
2) Sprinkle with black pepper.
3) Put a little washing up liquid on the tip of a cotton bud.
4) Place lightly on top of the water in the centre of the plate.
5) Watch what happens!
Why?
Surface tension which holds water molecules together can break with a single droplet of dishwashing liquid.
Light Refraction Through Water
What you’ll need: • Piece of paper • Marker • Glass • Water
What’s next? 1) Draw and colour in two arrows on a piece of paper. One arrow near the top and one arrow near the bottom. Make the arrows point the same direction.
2) Fill a glass with water.
3) Slowly lower the piece of paper behind the glass of water.
4) Look through the glass of water.
5) Watch what happens!
Why?
The scientific concept that is at work in this experiment is called refraction, which means the bending of light. Refraction occurs when light travels from one medium into another. (i.e. Air to Water, Water to Air).

Conserving Water
Brought to you by:
Water is a valuable resource. By conserving water and only using what we need,we can all contribute to building a sustainable water supply for everyone.
Turn off the tap
Tip: Turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth or
shaving. Save up to 6 liters of water per minute.
Time your shower
Tip: An average shower uses 10 litres of water per minute. Taking
a shorter shower will save lots of water.
Load ‘em up
Tip: Run your washing machine and dishwasher with full loads
and save water and energy!
Keep chilling
Tip: Instead of running the cold tap for a cool drink, keep a jug of water in the fridge. This could save up to
10 litres of water per day.
Use it twice
Tip: Place a basin in your sink so when you rinse or wash food you can collect the water and use
it for watering plants.
If it’s yellow, let it mellow
Tip: Toilet flushing is one of the biggest water users in most
homes. Consider only flushing the toilet when you really need to.
Check for leaks
Tip: Check for water leaks in your home. You may be eligible for a free leak investigation and repair
with Irish Water.
Drop the hose
Tip: Use a rose head watering canin the garden and a bucket and
sponge to wash your car. A hose uses more water in one hour thanthe average family uses in a day.
Garden clever
Tip: Water your plants in the earlymorning or late evening. This saves water evaporating and
avoids scorching your plants too.
Layer up
Tip: Add layers of plant material, like bark or straw, to your garden soil to help it retain more water.
Choose to save
Tip: When you buy new appliances choose ones that use less water.
Such as a toilet cistern bag, ashower timer or a dual flush toilet.
Butt seriously!
Tip: Install a water butt to harvestrainwater from your gutters for
watering your garden.
