PTC Departmental Advisors

• Many departments have faculty members who advise within their own department, in which case you should not necessarily visit the advising center to be advised.

• These departments include: – Business – Culinary – Computer Science/Information Technology – Cosmetology – Early Childhood Education and Teaching – Technical Programs – Language and Literature – Speech Communication – Dental Assisting – Practical Nursing

See attached handout for more information about departmental advisors.

Why do you need to meet with a PTC academic advisor?

• To set educational, career, and life goals

• To create a plan for graduation by choosing a degree and becoming familiar with your requirements

• To get answers to any questions regarding your degree plan or a specific class

• To get assistance with registration, if needed

• To get advice from an advisor to help you choose the best course of action for achieving your goals

Getting Ready for Registration…

IMPORTANT INFORMATION for Current Students

• You are now a “current student” if you are enrolled in classes at PTC

• Registration opens early for current students

• Registration for classes is available online

• EARLY SPRING REGISTRATION FOR CURRENT STUDENTS BEGINS ON OCTOBER 18TH.

Tips for Successful Advising: Student’s Responsibility

• Prepare for your visits to the Advising Center • Know your program requirements • Be knowledgeable of and understand PTC’s academic

policies • Become familiar with the campus policies and

programs by reading the course catalog • Observe academic deadlines such as Registration,

Drop/Add, Payment, etc. • Be aware that you are ultimately responsible for all

aspects of your education while at PTC. • DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!

Tips for Registration • Decide which degree you wish to obtain so that you have

an idea of what courses you must complete. • Make sure you are finished with any required

developmental courses prior to working on other courses. • Check to see if you need a reading, writing, or math class,

as these are usually prerequisites for later courses. • Check the prerequisites for what courses you want to take.

You can do this by looking in the course catalog online. • If you have taken prerequisites at another school,

understand that you may need an override. Visit the advising center early for assistance obtaining an override into a class you may need.

See attached handout for more information on

prerequisites.

Registration and Financial Aid • According to Federal Law, Financial Aid CANNOT pay

for you to repeat a course that you have already successfully completed.

• Successful completion, according to the federal government, is earning a “D” or higher in a class.

• How does this affect me? – At Pulaski Tech, some courses require you to complete

prerequisites with a C or higher before you can move on to the next course.

– For example, you must earn a “C” or higher in English Comp I before taking English Comp II. If you completed English Comp I with a “D”, you must still retake the course and earn a “C” or higher to advance to English Comp II. However, you would have to pay on your own to retake English Comp I. Financial Aid WILL NOT PAY.

Your PTC degree options

• Transfer degrees: – Associate of Arts – Associate of Science

• Job Skills Degrees

– Associate of APPLIED Science – Technical Certificate

• View all Programs of Study on our website at http://pulaskitech.edu/programs_of_study/

Developmental Education

• Your ACT or Compass scores may place you in one or more developmental courses (DEVE).

• Developmental or DEVE courses: • Are prerequisites for many college level courses. Therefore, they

must be completed before you can move on to other classes. • Further develop your reading, writing, and math skills. • Do not count for credit toward your degree program. • Are building your foundation for your later coursework and are VITAL

to your success at PTC. • Are designed to SET YOU UP FOR SUCCESS, NOT FAILURE .

• TIP: You can retake the Compass exam as many times as you like. If you

are doing well in your developmental courses, you may try to test out of the next required course by retaking the Compass.

See handout for the DEVE reading, writing, and math course sequence.

Using the PTC Course Catalog • The PTC Catalog is one of the most important resource books you will have

during your college career. The catalog tells you everything you need to know about being a PTC student.

• The course catalog includes valuable information:

– Admissions polices

– Financial Aid policies

– Academic policies

– Programs of study available at PTC

– Course Descriptions with prerequisites and corequisites listed

• The course descriptions section of the course catalog is one of the most important. This section gives you course numbers, short descriptions of what you will learn in the various courses, any prerequisites you must take before you can register for a course, and/or corequisite courses you must take at the same time.

• You may access the course catalog online at http://www.pulaskitech.edu/admission/web_catalog.
