It%gives%me%great%joy%to%share%the%second%edition%of%the%Chirag%School%Newsletter%with%you.%After%we%sent%out%our%previous%newsletter%we%received%a%lot%of%encouragement%from%our%well@wishers.%We%hope%that%we%can%continue%communication%with%all%the%stakeholders%of%the%Chirag%School%and%ensure%that%you%all%feel%connected%with%us.%A%lot%has%happened%in%the%last%couple%of%months.%Firstly,%I%have%settled%in%well%and%feel%much%more%comfortable%in%my%role.%Secondly,%we%have%identified%our%focus%areas%for%the%school%for%this%year%as%language,%physical%education%and%digital%literacy.%%%

In%order%to%understand%the%level%of%the%students%in%reading%fluency,%accuracy%and%comprehension%in%Hindi%and%English%we%conducted%a%baseline%reading%assessment%of%all%the%students.%Based%on%the%results%we%have%designed%a%focused%intervention%for%the%needs%of%the%students%and%dedicated%40%minutes%every%day%on%improving%reading.%Apart%from%focused%reading%instruction%we%have%also%introduced%a%program%called%D.E.A.R%(Drop%Everything%And%Read)%when,%twice%a%week,%everyone%at%school,%right%from%the%principal,%support%staff,%teachers,%volunteers%to%the%youngest%child%choose%books%based%on%interest%and%ability%and%literally%drop%everything%and%read.%I%hope%through%this%program%we%are%able%to%develop%not%only%habitual%readers%but%also%critical%thinkers%at%Chirag%School.%%%

We%have%started%an%after%school%sports%program%for%the%students%of%grades%4%and%5.%The%goal%is%to%build%a%sense%of%gender@equality,%sportsmanship%and%respect%as%well%as%develop%physical%fitness%and%basic%skills.%%

With%the%help%of%a%volunteer,%we%are%in%the%process%of%piloting%a%computer%curriculum%for%grades%4%and%5%that%includes%computer%hardware%and%software,%basic%application%software,%‘scratch’%coding,%internet%and%cyber%safety.%We%wish%to%encourage%mathematical%and%logical%thinking%in%students%through%coding%and%programming.%This%course%is%as%much%for%the%teachers%as%for%the%students%so%that%going%forward%we%can%make%this%program%sustainable.%%%

When%I%introduced%the%idea%of%‘Drop%Every%Thing%and%Read’%to%the%students,%a%child%asked%me%“won’t%that%be%too%boring%–%to%just%read”.%This%caused%me%to%think%about%what%John%Holt,%an%educator,%meant%when%he%said%we%have%sucked%the%joy%out%of%reading%and%made%it%a%mechanical%exercise.%%%

Research%suggests%that%reading%good%children’s%literature%improves%academic%performance%of%students.%While%this%is%true,%we%sometime%tend%to%overlook%some%other%benefits%of%reading.%Reading%can%be%a%source%of%both%pleasure%and%understanding%and%helps%children%explore%a%world%beyond%their%immediate%environment.%It%enables%children%to%engage%with%ideas%and%characters%which%might%seem%alien%and%provides%them%an%opportunity%to%understand%human%behaviour.%In%the%words%of%Rebecca%J.%Lukens,%“It%(reading%good%literature)%explores%what%it%is%like%to%be%a%complicated%human%being%in%a%complicated%world.”%%%

Chirag%School%was%fortunate%to%have%a%visit%by%wildlife%biologist,%Jignasu%Dolia%(Jigu),%M.Sc.%in%Wildlife%Biology%and%Conservation%from%the%National%Centre%for%Biological%Sciences,%Bangalore.%Ever%since%childhood,%Jigu%was%fascinated%by%wildlife%in%general%and%especially%snakes%due%to%their%sheer%beauty%and%grace.%As%he%explained%to%students:%“Unlike%other%charismatic%species%(e.g.%tiger,%%elephant,%etc.),%snakes%are%unfortunately%misunderstood,%feared,%even%loathed%by%most%people.”%%

The%focus%of%the%visit%was%to%show%students%a%Himalayan%Trinket%(Orthriophis(hodgsoni),%one%of%the%most%common%non@venomous%snakes%found%in%the%Kumaon.%According%to%Jigu%:%“Its%gentle%and%docile%nature%makes%it%an%ideal%subject%for%spreading%awareness%about%snakes%and%their%ecology.%It%mainly%feeds%on%mice%and%other%rodents.%Like%most%snakes,%it%probably%feeds%once%in%a%week%or%two.%However,%no%accurate%data%on%this%is%available%from%the%wild.%Its%average%length%is%4’%to%4.5’.”%%
