ThescrapbookinBox2,SeriesVI,wascompiledbyAgnesStockbridge,wifeofClaytonB.Stockbridge.Mr.Stockbridgewasthewinnerofthe1953CapeAnnLiteraryAward.Hisplay,"GloucesterStory,"earnedtheauthora$100prizeandasilvertrophydonatedbyRusselCrouse.Crouse,asummerresidentofAnnisquam,wasthecelebratedplaywrightof"LifewithFather"and"CallMeMadam."

ThecontestwastheLiteratureandDramapartoftheGloucesterSummerFestival.TheLiteratureandDramaFestivalwaschairedbyHydeCoxwiththesupportofMayorJosephJ.Grillo.Aplay,"TheWitchofDogtown,"writtenbyBrownUniversityProf.S.FosterDamon,asummerresidentofAnnisquam,wasjudgedsecondbestandwastobepresentedin1954.

Mr.Stockbridgewasalocalplumberwhowroteplaysasahobby,noneeverbeingpresented.The"GloucesterStory,"setattheturnofthecentury(1900)isaboutayoungman'sdesiretogotoseainafishingschooner.Heisfacedwithsternoppositionfromhisparentsandgirlfriend,whoarealltooawareofthelossoflifeamongfishermen.Theschoonercollideswithaoceanliner;allhandsarerescuedexceptfortheyoungman.Buteventuallyitturnsoutthathetoowassavedandsothereisahappyreunion.

Theplaywasahugesuccess,beingpresentedinGloucesterin1953,1954,1963and1969.ItreceivedpositivereviewsnotonlyfromtheGloucesterTimesbutfromallBostonandNewYorknewspapers.Muchwasmadeoveraplumberwritinganaward-winningplay.Inthefollowingyears,noplaywasdeemedacceptableforthefestival.
