A Word from Father Rick
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!
As we just begin Great and Holy Lent I ask
for your forgiveness if I have offended and/or
hurt anyone of you. I also ask for your continu-
ing prayers that I may faithfully fulfill my
priestly duties in shepherding the flock entrust-
ed to me. I extend my sincere apologies for
whenever and wherever I have fallen short. I
pray all of you will join me in prayer, worship,
fasting and almsgiving during this season of
repentance. We must not underestimate the
power of prayer and the mercy of God, espe-
cially when we stand in His presence during the
sacred services in His holy temple. Let us also
gather in fellowship during Lenten meals pre-
pared by others on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Let us seek to grow in knowledge by participat-
ing in the Lenten lectures on the same nights.
And let us gather with our fellow Orthodox
Christians in the wider community at the Pan-
Orthodox Lenten Vespers on Sunday late after-
noons.
To help further our learning, we are excited
to have Mr. Bobby Maddex for our Lenten re-
treat the first weekend of March. The theme is
Film/Cinema and Orthodox Christianity and it
will be a bit different than those of the past but
no less enjoyable and enlightening. Remember,
we will host the Sunday Vespers that weekend.
So please be present for worship and fellow-
ship meal to extend our hospitality to our many
guests. See the inserts for detailed info.
Congratulations to all our participants in the
recent basketball tournament hosted by Holy
Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Sioux City,
Iowa. We had a JOY team, two GOYA boys
team, and a men’s team. One of the boys’
teams won second place. Thank you to the
coaches Milam Paraschou, Soule Paraschou and George Mastrogiorgis!
We are excited that a new Greek Orthodox
Metropolitan of Chicago has been elected by
the Patriarchal Synod. Fr. Nathanael Symeoni-
des will be ordained as bishop on March 17th in
New York and enthroned on March 24th in Chi-
cago. Everyone is invited to both worship ser-
vices. This is historic since Fr. Nathanael be-
comes the newest bishop of Chicago since Met-
ropolitan Iakovos, of blessed memory, became
bishop in 1979. Please pray that God may en-
lighten and strengthen him for this high calling
to the Archpriesthood.
With the election of Fr. Nathanael, our chan-
cellor Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos, will take
a year-long sabbatical effective February 10th.
Bishop Demetrios has visited our parish numer-
ous times to celebrate liturgy and share fellow-
ship with us. We thank him for his service as
chancellor to Metropolitan Iakovos and our
Metropolis for over twenty years. In case you
don’t know, a chancellor in the Greek Ortho-
dox Church, with the presiding hierarch’s
blessing, handles most of the details regarding
assignments, transfers and other matters per-
taining to the clergy. His Grace ably, faithfully
and diligently fulfilled that role. May his sab-
batical be enriching and restful!
Our 2018 Stewardship Drive continues as we
focus on our renewed commitment of Time,
Talent and Treasure to God’s Holy Church.
The 2018 theme is “Whatever you do, work at
it with all your heart as working for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23). If you have
not already, please meditate on how, through
stewardship to the Church, you can love the
Lord your God with all your heart, all your
mind and all your soul and all your strength,
and your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:35-
40). Three simple principles for treasure/
financial commitment: 1) give generously, 2)
give sacrificially, and 3) give purposively.
Three practical guidelines: 1) give at least 3%
of gross income (biblical model of stewardship is tithing or giving 10%), 2) be sure to increase
giving from previous year, and 3) budget your
stewardship first—then budget everything else.
Kali Tessarakosti! Great Lent!

►ORDINATION AND ENTHRONEMENT DATES FOR METROPOLITAN-ELECT NATHANAEL OF CHICAGO ANNOUNCED: His
Eminence Archbishop Demetrios Geron of America announces the ordination and enthronement of Metropolitan-elect Nathanael of Chicago. The ordi-
nation of Archimandrite Nathanael Symeonides to the Episcopacy will take place on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the
Holy Trinity in New York City. The service of Orthros will begin at 8:30am and the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy will begin at 9:30am. His Eminence
Archbishop Demetrios of America will enthrone metropolitan-elect Nathanael on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Chicago’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral of
the Annunciation with the service beginning at 11am. More details will be forthcoming.
►ARCHDIOCESE STATEMENT ON FLORIDA HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING: The horrible mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas
High School in Parkland Florida, on Feb. 14, has caused the tragic loss of life for 17 students and teachers, has caused direct pain and grief to the fami-
lies and friends of the victims and has brought sadness, sorrow and anger to the whole country and the world.
As the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, we share the deep pain and mourning for the horrific death of 17 innocent human beings, and we
stand by the countless others who are suffering as a result of this abominable act. Our fervent prayers and thoughts are with the victims, with their fam-
ilies and with their friends.
This absolutely unacceptable and totally unthinkable school massacre is yet another sad chapter in a long series of violent crimes perpetrated across
our country against innocent victims, many times against children, many times against young students in our schools and college campuses. It seems
that in no other country this is allowed.
As we find ourselves, once again, in need of offering words of comfort and solace, words of solidarity and hope to those who were directly affected,
we seriously question whether we have done all we can to stop this epidemic disease. How many more victims, how many more school children, how
many more teenagers and teachers should die before we act? Let us then work to restore the schools to be the sanctuaries that they, by nature, should
be. Let us all work to restore trust and confidence within our children by establishing the appropriate security conditions and legal measures prohibiting
any kind of any repetition of the massacre in Parkland, Florida.
We offer our wholehearted plea to our elected officials for immediate and effective action. Our plea is accompanied by the certainty that by the assis-
tance of the God of mercy and wisdom, positive results will be achieved in order to restore hope to our society and the world.

Parish Council Update: Youth and
adults, do you enjoy greeting and helping
people? One of the Council priorities for
2018 is to encourage more parishioners to
take an active role in church services and
activities. It is always a joy to see a young
person or an adult at the entrance to the
narthex greeting us as we enter and offer-
ing a weekly church bulletin. This is also
an opportunity to meet someone new.
Council members appreciate the time and
commitment to taking on these
vital roles and we even train
when necessary!
Examples of how you can
help include: reading the Epis-
tle; offering a bulletin; helping
someone to a seat; filling the
candle trays or guide a guest
through church service books.
Taking on any of these roles can
be rewarding. If you are inter-
ested in helping with ushering,
please contact: Diane Anastos,

Letter from the Youth Minister:
To our Beloved Community,
Before we began our Lenten journey of
2018, the youth of St. George went down to
Sioux City for our annual Greek Basketball
Tournament. Both our GOYA and JOY
teams made it to second place! We’re all
very proud of their sportsmanship and
respect, and we thank Sioux City for host-
ing us this year. Below are some pictures
from our time there.
As we begin Lent, it is my hope that we
can teach our community that this is a time
to reflect and re-focus ourselves on our
relationship with God. The church does
this by prescribing for us a set of things we
can do.
• Make a point to attend a few more ser-
vices that you normally would not.
With Lent comes the services of Pre-
Sanctified Liturgies held on Wednes-
days and Fridays.
• Participate in the sacrament of Confes-
sion. Confession is vital to our spiritual
lives as it cleans the dirty window of
our souls. All the smudge, dirt, mud,
and dirtiness on that window becomes
clean again as we participate in this
holy sacrament.
• Fasting. Fasting is not just about giv-
ing something up to show all you need
is God. While that may be a part of it,
the church prescribes fasting to help
center ourselves in prayer. When giv-
ing up meat for Lent, it is hoped that
one would pray when feeling hungry
and recognize the importance of God
in our lives. Without prayer, fasting is
utterly pointless.
• Read. While we should always be
reading at least a chapter of the Bible a
day, this is also a great time to learn
about Orthodoxy through books. A
great book that comes to mind is called
“Great Lent.”

–From the Mission Statement
of National Philoptochos
Years ago, Past National Philoptochos President Georgia Skeadas
reflected the following on the sacred journey of Great Lent “The period
of Lent is called the spiritual spring which blossoms with the fruits of
the Spirit…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control. The Lenten season offers us the opportunity
for renewal, reflection, special prayer and philanthropic actions. It is a
time that we need to intensify our dedication to the mission of Philopto-
chos and our commitment to philanthropy. It is through our acts of chari-
ty, our dedication to philanthropy and an intensified commitment in this
regard that we begin to approach the objective of loving God and one
another.”
Our goal, as Philoptochos
members is to make a posi-
tive difference in the world,
to touch people’s hearts, to
create joy and inspire those
around us. Within each of us
is the capacity to express
love and show compassion,
to share a special moment,
and to make a difference.
When you open your heart,
you add light to the world.
We are so appreciative of
all our supporters for your
time, generosity and prayers.
If you are interested to learn
more about Philoptochos, we
warmly invite you to join us!
Upcoming meetings dates are:
Sunday, March 18th and Sun-
day, May 6th following Divine
Liturgy.
In Christ’s service,
Vicky Paraschou
From the Parish Council President Alexis Bighley
Our goal for the 2018 Parish Council is to focus on building community engagement, vibrancy and vision. To that end, I will attempt
to update the community on our focus through occasional columns in Glad Tidings.
The three areas I am going to touch on today are ministries that we are energizing:
The Welcome & Outreach Ministry will be co-chaired by Eleni Hoffhines and Bob Baffa, with a goal of welcoming new church at-
tendees and introducing them to our wonderful community.
Our Young at Heart Ministry will be co-chaired by Sue and Richard Gnetz, with the able assistance of Lily Zahariades. Their first
event this year is a focus on the newly renovated State Capitol designed by Cass Gilbert, with a lecture by Margie Pearson after social
hour on Sunday, May 6. A guided tour of the State Capitol will be scheduled later in the year.
New this year is the Strategic Planning Ministry that will look into the future of St. George GOC at 3 years, 5, years and 10 years out in an effort
to identify achievable goals for our community.
St. George is an amazing community and we will continue to move St. George forward with the help of all wonderful parishioners. Please stay tuned
for our progress.
FOCUS MN Needs your Help: After nearly 8 years on Lake Street, the building in which FOCUS Minnesota has been leasing space, was
recently sold. The rent was increased by 220% due March 1st and consequently they must move. Matushka Vera has asked for help from our parishes in
the following ways:
• All donations of material goods (like groceries and clothing) to FOCUS must stop immediately until further notice. Monetary contributions
are still welcome, of course! Until FOCUS is relocated you may hold your donations or give them to other worthy community organizations.
• Seeking help from parishes, starting May 1, 2018, with a particular ministry - that of the sandwiches to homeless and indigent youth, dis-
tributed through drop-in shelters. This activity would take place on Wednesday mornings, in our own parishes, on a 5 week rotation basis. During a
rotation, the faithful would gather to make 75-80 sandwich bags, that also include a small snack or two. Focus would collect the sandwiches weekly
and deliver them to the shelter. After a 5 week commitment, it would then pass to the next parish on the list.
• Please, keep your eyes and ears open for a small commercial property with a kitchen space as well as space for storage of clothing, house-
hold goods and dry goods; either for sale or lease, in a depressed area and preferably in/around Minneapolis or St. Paul. If anyone knows of a single-
level space FOCUS can use please let Matushka Vera know how you might be able to help, or put her in touch with those who can.
• Also, parishes are asked to consider granting some unused storage space to FOCUS in the interim during their move and/or to host one or
more of the FOCUS ministries while the move is underway.
Finally, pray for our shared Orthodox ministry to the poor and needy through this challenging time of transition. The helper of the homeless is
now homeless! And we seek God's will to bring us to the next stage of our work in the Twin Cities.

8:00PM Why Watch?
What are the reasons you watch movies? Out of habit or to be entertained? Should Orthodox Christians even watch movies? Is it a good idea to ingest art emanating from outside the Church? What about sex and violence? To what degree do we subject ourselves to these things? Come and hear Bobby talk about these ques-tions and his personal journey to Orthodoxy.
Saturday, March 3

10:30AM How to Watch
Assuming I have convinced you to watch movies, here are some suggestions for how to do it. What do you look for in a film? What are the most important elements to look for in a film? Let’s look at the elements that comprise a movie and how they contribute to meaning.

1:00PM What to Watch
There’s a lot out there, so how do you select content that will edify and strengthen your Orthodox faith? What are the films to start with, and what are the advance markers that indicate a film might be worthy of your time? When should you leave a film? These are the questions we will answer in the final lecture.

BIOGRAPHY
Mr. Bobby Maddex, MA
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Wheaton College (1994) Masters of Arts, British Literature, DePaul University (2002)
Background
Bobby Maddex is a Senior Editor of Salvo Magazine, Station Man-ager of Ancient Faith Radio (AFR; http://www.ancientfaith.com), host of the AFR podcast “The Orthodox Moviegoer,” and a freelance writer and speaker on topics related to faith and culture. Bobby graduated from Wheaton College in 1994 with a degree in Political Science. After spending five years as senior editor of Gadfly, a national arts-and-culture publication out of Charlottesville, Virginia, and serving a one-year stint as the marketing director of Touchstone magazine in Chica-go, he earned a Masters Degree in British Literature from DePaul University in 2002. He and his wife Paige live in Chesterton, Indiana, with their three daughters and son.
Bobby started his career in journalism in 1994 as an editor of Gadfly magazine, a national arts-and-culture periodical out of Charlottesville, Virginia. In addition to reviewing films for the publica-tion, he had the opportunity to interview a number of prominent cultural figures, including Ray Bradbury, Suzanne Vega, Steven Soderbergh, Dana Gioia, and Jonathan Yardley. Several years later he became the Marketing Director of Touchstone Magazine, another national periodical, this one focused on conservative ecumenism and what should be the fundamental commonalities be-tween the various expressions of Christian theology—what C. S. Lewis called “Mere Christianity.”
It was at this time that Bobby and his wife converted to Eastern Orthodoxy. Their conversion was in equal part a response to the shortcomings of Evangelical Protestantism, Bobby’s educa-tion at the hands of Touchstone, and—most significantly—his sister and brother-in-law’s Chrisma-tion a few years earlier. After graduate school and a brief stint as a teacher of English literature in Austin, Texas, Bobby and Paige returned to Chicago where Bobby helped start Salvo, a journal dedicated to debunking the cultural myths that have undercut human dignity, all but destroyed the notions of virtue and morality, and slowly eroded our appetite for transcendence.
In 2009, Bobby changed careers and became the manager of Ancient Faith Radio, an internet ministry that his father and mother started on their back porch in 2004. Today, the podcasts of Ancient Faith Radio receive 300,000 downloads a month and are heard in over 172 countries. Bobby now spends most of his time developing content, hosting interview programs, and editing and producing radio programming, though he once had his own podcast on the network titled “The Orthodox Moviegoer.” Throughout this career, he has continued to keep tabs on film and hopes to resurrect the “Moviegoer” as a new video podcast.

SATURDAY, MARCH 3 4:00PM Please join Bobby for a viewing of one of his favorite films "Lars and the Real Girl." At the conclusion, Bobby will share a few of his thoughts about the movie and then open the floor to questions. "Lars and the Real Girl" is a story about a sweet, though socially inept, man whose non-sexual friendship with a life-size doll draws him into a community that ultimately heals him and his troubled past. Food- if we have leftovers. Parents- this movie is acceptable for teenage children but please re-search and decide on your own.
