Arizona Health Sciences Library Mission

The AHSL’s mission is to advance the education, research, clinical practice and community service goals of the Arizona Health Sciences Centers and to foster informed health care practice in Arizona by: • Assuring access to biomedical

information resources in all formats; • Teaching the principles & techniques

of information retrieval & management;

• Providing services and an environment that promote effective information use and study.

History & Background:Development of the New Campus

The state universities of Arizona

Flagstaff: Northern Arizona University (NAU)

Phoenix: Arizona State University (ASU – DPC & Tempe)

Tucson: University of Arizona

History

• Idea of a 4-year medical school for the Phoenix area dates back at least 25 years..

• Now-famous 2004 Colorado river trip when the ASU and UA presidents reached an agreement with urging from Board of Regents– Expand UA COM from Tucson to a second

campus in Phoenix

– ASU as partner

– Initial ASU contribution would include a new

Department of Biomedical Informatics

Challenges

Where we are today - Challenges

Starting with the end in mind…

The options:

1. Continue to operate as we are now, a UA library whose med students have remote access to ASU library resources, or

2. Piecemeal together small solutions to ease the difficulties of access without spending significant monies, or

3. Aim to create a seamless Phoenix Biomedical Campus library system that serves all faculty, students and staff of the PBC regardless of home institution.

Challenges for users

• Locating materials• Checking out print

materials, media and equipment

• Accessing resources remotely

27

Challenges for Library Staff

• Administering the library has many complex reporting patterns

• Supervising Staff and Faculty

• Sharing Resources

Identifying and Finding Resources

Users must now search the ASU, UA, and NAU individual online catalogs to locate resources

31

32

Staffing the Library

32

NowUA AHSL 2.7 library professionals and student workers

ASU Nursing and BMI .3 library professionals (DPC and Tempe)

ASU CONHI LRC 3.5 FTE classified staff/coordinators (DPC)

NAU 1.0 FTE (Flagstaff)

2012-13UA AHSL + NAU 6.0 library professionals

ASU Nursing and BMI .2 library professionals

ASU CONHI LRC 3.5 FTE classified staff/coordinators

Student Workers 2.5 FTE

Challenges

• 3 separate universities, one board of regents

• 2 ILSs (Innovative)/3 contracts

• 3 separate collections• 3 OPACs• 3 HR Departments• 3 faculty/staff bodies

33

Accomplishments

34

• Initial issues identified are being dealt with slowly

• All students can use physical PBC resources

• ASU Students on this campus may apply for remote access

• We’re already collaborating and saving $

• Collections• Teaching• Planning

Recommendations

• Be sure everyone is involved that should be involved (on the boat)

• Use technology and meetings to stay connected

• Rely on facilities director and architects

• Read a lot• Collaborate & connect,

regionally and nationally

35

Lessons Learned

• An almost entirely digital library IS different!

• Did not entirely gain upper library management enthusiastic engagement (at the University Librarian Level)

• Have not finalized fiscal arrangements/sharing

• Staffing and officing still a bit vague

• ABOR not yet directly engaged 36
