APPENDIX A

M*yl9» 1950

De«r Coach;

Coagrattilations on the outataadiag defeacive record compiled by your team during the 1949 football aeaaoa. According to the official football etatietice releaced by the National Collegiate Athletic dbreau your team ranked near the top in total defease.

My purpose in writing to you is to ask for your cooperation in a study I am making of defensive football formations being used by successful coaches throughout the nation. Uam.a graduate student at the College of William and Mary and plan to w rite my thesis on the above topic. I have chosen defensive form ations for my study because there is nothing in football 1 enjoy m ore than watching a well coached and smoothly coordinated team defense in action.

I rea lise the defensive formation used is determined by a great many things such as team personnel, game conditions, play situation» etc. In order to be as economical with your tim e as possible,I have made the enclosed questionnaire brief, and therefore, m ust lim it my study to standard basic defenses.

I would appreciate it very much if you could find time to fill out the enclosed questionnaire and re tu rn it to me at your earliest convenience as I hope to complete -the study th is sum m er. It should r e quire very little of your tim e, but your answer will mean a great deal to me, as the study is lim ited to the top 30 team s in total defense for 1949. Without your help I will be unable to complete the study.

I rea lise your time is valuable and, therefore, I would like to repay you in some way for your cooperation. If the returns are sufficient to enable me to complete the study, 1 will be happy to send you a mimeographed copy of the resu lts if you should care for one.

Any information you give will be kept stric tly confi# dential unless otherwise requested, in which case you will receive full recognition for information submitted.

Thanking you in advance for your cocqpieration in this study, and wishing you continued success, I am

Sincerely yours,

HC/ie H arry Caughron
