The 7100 Series ARC® is made tooperate in a low flow condition forextended periods without damage to the valve or bypass piping system. The need is no longer just for emergency, short duration shut down, but forextended operation at low flows.
Our check and bypass/pressureletdown elements are specificallydesigned to operate under thesedifficult conditions. There is no need
for an auxiliary manual by-pass systemwhich only serves to negate theadvantage of an automatic system.
The design of the 7100 Series ARC®
is the result of 27 years of experienceand over nine thousand ARC® valves inservice. And to help ensure every valveworks properly, functional tests areperformed and the valves are thencertified for the application.
General DescriptionThe 7100 Series ARC® Valve has beenspecifically designed and manufacturedto meet the demands and operatingphilosophies of today’s high pressurecentrifugal pumps. Many power plantsare now operating under peaking orthrottled conditions, which in turnrequires the pumps to operate at lessthan their optimal design and performancelevels. As a result, they are subject toserious damage from hydraulic, mechanical and/or thermal abnormalities.
The 7100 Series ARC® provides the mosteconomical and reliable system to protectpumps from the dangers of low and/orreverse flow. It combines the functions of a check valve, flow sensing device, minimum flow control and pressureletdown into a single valve. The ARC®
valve requires no external use of powerand installs easily with only threeconnections. By eliminating at leastseven major interdependent components, that ordinarily would be necessary toprovide this protection, we have not onlysimplified the system, but made it muchmore reliable.
Our quest for ensured pump flow protectiondoes not, however, end at just providingthe hardware. We analyze the completepumping system and piping. Very oftenthe application’s fluid hydraulics anddynamics compromise the effectivenessof the protection system. A thoroughanalysis of conditions up and downstreamof both the pump and ARC® valve willprovide us with solutions to “reliable”protection... things such as 1) properpressure throughout the complete bypass piping to prevent any level offlashing or cavitation; (a condition that is prevalent in all pressure breakdownsystems); 2) improved bypass manifoldarrangements; 3) good piping layoutsthat promote stable operation; 4) stableand reliable interaction of pump andvalve at less than optimal conditions of operation.
A self-contained system, the 7100 Series ARC® valve has a pressure reducing trim and is in-line repairable.

Yarway 7100 Series ARC® Valve For Centrifugal Pump Protection
Copyright © 2013 Pentair. All rights reserved. YAWMC-04188
In high pressure pumping applicationsthe system often does not provideadequate pressure in the bypass line to prevent cavitation or flashing. Eitherof these conditions is undesirable in thatit can cause damage to both valves andthe pipe system or cause a reduction in flow beyond the minimum desired, jeopardizing the pump protectionsystem. All PRVs will experience avelocity induced recovery effect whichwill limit the amount of pressure drop a valve can take and cause a reductionin flow capacity.
The requirement of back pressure is generic to all pressure reducingapplications. Pressure reduction evenby multiple stage cascading such as inthe 7100 Series ARC® can minimize therequirement, however no valve designwill redefine a fluid’s physical properties.
This becomes especially important inmodulating systems. A fixed orifice willnot provide the proper back pressure atall flow levels. As the flow in the bypass
line is reduced, the orifice becomes lesseffective. Proper system design shouldbe used to optimize valve pressurereduction and consider all fluid dynamiceffects downstream of any pressurereducing device.
When adequate back pressure is notavailable downstream of a pressurereducing valve, vapor bubbles will formin the zone just downstream of the valvelast stage control surface. This zone isdefined as the “Vena Contracta” andrepresents the point of highest fluidvelocity and lowest pressure. Thepotential for 1) damage to downstreampiping components and 2) flowreduction exists from this point. Whenline pressure remains below the fluidvapor pressure, any existing bubbleswill remain and expand as piping frictionfurther reduces line pressure. This canbe defined as a “FLASHING CONDITION”and is characterized by a polishedappearance on affected surfaces. Whenthe line pressure drops below the fluid
vapor pressure and then recovers, anyentrapped vapor bubbles will collapse(implode). This is defined as a“CAVITATING CONDITION” and ischaracterized by a cinder likeappearance on affected surfaces. The resolution of either condition is best addressed by eliminating vaporformation. This can be ensured by theprovision of adequate back pressure. The “Backpressure Factor” is key toreliable system operation and must not be ignored in piping designconsiderations.
As such we feel it is the obligation of a responsible Automatic RecirculationControl Valve manufacturer to analyzethe system needs and supply a BackPressure Regulator (BPR) when it iswarranted by the laws of fluid dynamics. For on/off systems this could be asimple orifice, but for modulatingconditions it must be a device like the BPR noted herein.

Performance – Profiled in Yarway’s Hydraulic Performance Test LabIn our hydraulic performance test laboratory, state-of-the-art data acquisition and computer graphics techniques are called upon for evaluation of the significant performancecharacteristics of Yarway recirculation control valves. The lab’s equipment makes it possible to test a valve over its complete flow range for factors including:
• Total flow through the pump
• Disc position
• Pressure drop across the main check
• Bypass Cv• Bypass DP
• Valve response to sudden changes in flow
• Bypass piston pressure
These detailed analyses are the user’s complete assurance that the valve meetsperformance requirements in all respects and can be supplied with the valve.
A certified test curve is shipped with each valve (see page 11 for example).
Insist on it, as you would for your pump!
