1. THANK YOU AND BEST WISHES TO YOLANDA MATTHEWS
YolandaMatthewswhojoinedtheHomeOfficewhenit
firstmovedtoHoustonresignedrecently.Shehadbeen
avaluablememberofourDSIfamily,hadanchoredthe
HomeOfficeduringacriticaltimeperiodbeforeVivian
LandrumjoinedDSIasourcurrentExecutiveDirector,
andwillberememberedforheroutgoingpersonality.
Herresignationisagreatlosstousbutwewishherand
herfamilythebest.Inthemeantime,Vivianhaskept
theHomeOffice(andtheBoard)ontrack.
2. APPOINTMENT OF A DSI CARETAKER BOARD FOR APDSI APDSIisthefirstinternationalregionestablishedbyDSI
and,assuch,itiswithmuchregretthatDSIhadtore-
movetherecentAPDSIBoardofDirectorsandreplace
itwithacaretakerBoard.Thisdecisionwastakenafter
repeatedurgingsforAPDSItoensurethatitsBoard
membersmaintaincurrentmembershipinDSI.
AttheJulyAPDSImeetinginBangkok,Thailand,I
wassaddenedtonotethatabout50%oftheAPDSI
Boardmembersdidnotattend.Ofthosewhodid,only
ahandfulweremembersofDSI.Indeed,ofthe21
APDSIBoardofDirectors,onlyeightweremembersin
goodstandingwithDSI.TheAPDSIBoardwasgiven
30daystoremedythesituationanddulyinformedthat
failuretorenewtheirDSImembershipsendsasignal
ofdisinterestinbeingaffiliatedwithDSIandAPDSI.
Sadly,afterthe30daysdeadlineandwithnoremedial
action,DSIhadnochoicebuttodisbandtheAPDSI
BoardonAugust21,2018.
PleaseallowmetoemphasizethatthatAPDSIhasnot
beendissolvedbut,rather,willbeunder“newmanage-
ment”;a5-membercaretakerBoardisbeingappointed
byDSItooverseeAPDSIbusinessandtosupportAP-
DSI2019.Thefive-membercaretakerBoardincludes:

Maling Ebrahimpour is the Dean and Profes-sor of Supply Chain in the College of Business Administration at The University of Rhode Island. He is an active researcher and has authored or coauthored over 100 articles that have been published in scientific journals and proceedings. Most of his work focuses on various issues of quality in both service and manufac-turing companies. He received his PhD in busi-ness administration from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has served on the editorial review board of several journals, including Journal of Quality Management, Journal of Operations Management, and Inter-national Journalof Production Research. mebrahimpour@uri.edu CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

caretakerboardfortheAPDSIsincemany(over50%)
of the APDSI board members were not members of
DSI.Thereareotherimportantitemsinhisletterand

annualconferenceinChicago.Itpromisestobeavery
engagingandhighenergyconference.

MatthewDrake,theeditorofDSJIE,providesade-

pasttwelvemonths.Perhisreport,theacceptance
rateforDSJIEwasabout32%andtheaverage

DSI.TheBoardofDSIhasbeenworkingonastandard
templateforasingle“Charter”documentthatcanbe
adaptedbyUS-basedregionstoaccountforregional
differences.Oncethisiscomplete,wewillthenwork
withtheinternationalregionsontheirgovernancedocu-
ments.
5. DSI POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Inaddition,withnewDSIBylawsinplace,wehavealso
beguntoworkonthePoliciesandProceduresManual.
ThismanualisaBoard-approvedsetofpoliciesand
proceduresgoverningthemanagementofDSIinits
totality,aswellasitsactivities.
ForthoseofyouwhohadbeenontheBoard,you
mayrecallthatthisisanothervoluminous,repetitive,
201-pagesmanual.In2015and2017,theDSIBoards
attemptedtoremoveredundanciesandmanagedto
shrinkthedocumentfrom201toapproximately30
pages.Now,itistimetorevisitthemanualandtoalign
existingandproposenewpoliciesandproceduresto
beconsistentwiththenewDSIBylaws.Ihopetohave
moretoreportearlynextyear.
6. “A COMMUNITY OF SCHOLARS, EDUCATORS, AND PROBLEM-SOLVERS” TAGLINE
SixdifferentDSIlogodesignswiththesuggestedtagline
abovehavebeenreceivedattheHomeOffice.The
BoardofDSIhasselectedthetwoformemberstocon-
sider(pleaseseepage9inthisissueofDecision Line
formoredetails).
Atthe2018AnnualMeetingandConferenceofDSIin

ofmyrelationshipwiththeInstitute,Ihavebeenthe
beneficiaryofconsiderablecumulativeknowledgeand
understandingoftheinnerworkingsoftheInstitute,as
wellasitspoliciesandprocedures.Itisanabsolute
honorandprivilegetobenominatedasacandidatefor
thepositionofDSIPresident-Elect.Givenmyconsid-
erablehistoryofinvolvementandknowledgeaboutthe
Institute,Ifeelquitewellqualified,confident,andready
toleadtheInstituteonitscontinuingjourneyforpursuit
ofexcellence.
VisionTheDecisionSciencesInstitutehasbeenalong-
standingandprominentorganizationforacademics
andprofessionalsinthedecisionsciencesarea.Over
theyears,theInstitutehasbuiltaprestigiousreputa-
tionforthequalityofitsproductsandservices,such
asitsannualandregionalconferences,facultyand
studentsdevelopmentactivities,placementservices,
andofcourse,it’seruditejournalsofhighacademic
repute.AlonglineofablePresidentsoftheInstitute
haveendeavoredhardtoprovideacontinuedascent
towardsexcellenceandsuccess.However,theInsti-
tutealsohastooperateinaverychallengingenviron-
mentwherethecompetitionkeepsgettingstronger
(e.g.,INFORMS,POMS,AIS/ICIS,AOM,justto
nameafew),andhencethepressuretocontinuously
improveisunrelenting.Wehavetorecognizethatour
membershaveotherchoices,andifwearenotable
tokeepimprovingourproductsandservices,wehave
theclearanddistinctdangeroflosingourmembership
tocompetitororganizations.Thus,wehavetokeep
ourstrategicvisionandprioritiesalignedtonotonly
meetourcompetitivechallenges,butatthesametime
toalsodrivecontinuedgrowth,enhanceglobalreputa-
tion,andkeepimprovingthe“deliveredvalue”ofour
productsandservices.Therefore,myoverallvisionfor
theDecisionSciencesInstituteistobethepre-eminent
Instituteofglobalreputeforscholarsandprofessionals
inthemultidisciplinaryareaofdecisionsciences.
PrioritiesTokeepimprovinginthefaceofchallengingcompeti-
tionandstrategicthreatsfromcompetingorganiza-
tions,weneedtoconsiderwaysinwhichwecan
strengthenthestrategicpositionoftheInstitute.In
additiontoleveragingourexistingstrengths,italso
entailsfocusingonour“multidisciplinary”strength,
andevendiscoveringnewwaystoexploitthis
strengthinordertosolidifyourcompetitiveadvantage.
Thisrequiresustomakecarefulstrategicmovesthat
canbeeffectiveincreatingamorepositiveandhigh
qualityimagefortheInstitute,enhancingourrespon-
sivenesstochangingdemands/requirementsfromour
membersandtheiruniversities,havingadiversified
portfolioofofferingstocreatebetter“deliveredvalue”,
attractingthetopscholarsaroundtheworldinthe
broadareaofdecisionsciencestobeourmostardent
ambassadors,andbeingproactiveinexploitingnew
opportunitiesofinteresttotheInstitute.However,we
arenotgoingtobeabletoaccomplishthesegoals
unlessweembraceacollaborativemindsetandwork
togetherdiligentlytowardsacommonagendaforthe
pursuitforexcellence.Iseethefollowingpriorities
andimperativesasbeingimportanttoachievethe
visionandgoalsIhavestatedabove.
Reputation and Growth Priority.Wehavetodrive
continuedgrowthandreputationofDSIbyengag-
ingeminentscholarsintheaffairsofourInstitute.
Thiscansignificantlyhelptopropelourcompetitive
advantage.Butwecannotengagethemunlesswe
areabletoattractthembyprovidingahigh“delivered
value”ofourproductsandservices,andtheprestige
ofmembershipintheInstitute.Inaddition,manag-
ingexternalperceptions,reputationalrankings,and
thequalityofourjournalsandpublicationswarrant
dedicatedeffortsfromourmembership,theeditorial
team,alongwiththeeditorialofficeofthepublisher.
Maintainingandfurtherbuildinguponthehighreputa-
tionofourjournalswouldneedtobeakeypriorityfor
us.Thisisaparticularlycriticalimperativebecause
severalofourclosestcompetitorshavealreadybuilt
theirreputationbasedontheirflagshipjournals,for
example,INFORMS,POMS,AOM,etc.Weneedto

Delivered Value Priority.TheInstituteprovidesvaluethroughitsproductandserviceofferingsdeliveredto
itsmembers.Alongwithmaintainingandfurtheren-
hancingthereputationalvalueandqualityofourprod-
ucts,i.e.,ourjournalsandpublications,wealsoneed
tokeepbuildingbettervalueinourserviceofferingsvia
ourconferences,placementservices,servicetothere-
gions,professionaldevelopmentservice,ourdoctoral
studentsconsortium,doctoraldissertationcompetition,
newfacultyconsortium,professionaldevelopment
workshops,instructionalinnovationactivities,etc.We
havealotgoingforus,andalreadyprovidehighvalue
toourmembers,butweneedtostrivetokeepimprov-
ingandinnovating,andkeepcreating,building,and
deliveringbettervaluetoourmembers.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration Priority. In order to
leverageandfurtherstrengthenthe“multi-disciplinary”
focusofourInstitute,weneedtofostercollaboration
acrossdisciplines,otherprofessionalorganizations/
societies,anduniversities.Thisissuegetstothevery
coreof“DecisionSciences”-whilethereareseveral
professionalsocietiesthatprimarilyfocusonasingle
orlimitedsetofdisciplines,suchasPOMS,AIS,AOM,
etc.,DSIhastheuniquecompetitivepositionofbeing
abletocreateinnovations,customervalue,andcom-
petitiveadvantagethrough“multidisciplinarity”.This
canonlybeenhancedthroughthecreationofmean-
ingfulcollaborationsandteambuilding,whichinturn
canprovideasoundwaytostrategicallydifferentiate
DSIfromourkeycompetitors,thuscreatingsignificant
competitiveadvantagefortheInstitute.
Globalization Priority.Weliveintheeraofglobal-
ization,wherebythenotionofdomesticdominanceis
merelyephemeral.Mostorganizationstodaycompete
inglobalmarkets,andneedtodevelopappropriate
globalstrategiesinordertodrivetheirglobalcompeti-
tiveness.DSIisnoexception–wecannotbeagreat
organizationsimplybasedonourdomesticactivities
andofferings.Weneedtoembarkonasignificant
globalizationdrivetodramaticallyincreaseourglobal
membershipbase(whichwillalsodrivegrowth),as
wellassubstantiallyenhanceourglobalreputation.
Wedolagbehindourkeycompetitorsinourglobal
reputation,memberships,andconferenceattendance
(forexample,comparedtoINFORMS,POMS,AOM,
AIS,etc.).Thisisanotherimportantimperativeto
keepbuildinggloballinkagesandsignificantlyin-
creaseourglobalactivities,andthemembershipand
involvementofcolleaguesfromaroundtheworld.
Insummary,basedonmyvisionandgoalsforDSI
mentionedabove,myimmediateprioritiesforaction
wouldbeasfollows.
1. Placehighstrategicemphasistofurtheren-
hancethestature,reputation,image,profile,and
competitivestrengthoftheInstituteintheglobal
arena.
2. Drivecontinuedgrowth,bothdomesticallyand
globally,andsignificantlyincreasetheinvolve-
mentofglobaltop-tierschoolsandleadingschol-
arsintheaffairsoftheInsitute.
3. Significantlyenhancethedeliveredvalueofthe
Institute’sproductsandservices,particularlythe
qualityoftheconferences,thescholarlyreputa-
tionofallthejournals/publications,andthemen-
toringofnewfacultyanddoctoralstudents.
4. Maintainstrategicandoperationalstabilityinthe
Institutetocontinuethepursuitofexcellenceand
competitivesuccess.
Finally,IwanttoreiteratethatIamabsolutelyprivi-
leged,honored,andhumbledtobenominatedforthe
positionofDSIPresident-Elect.Ipledgemystrong

topicandyourtimeline)andwillbefundamentalisset-
tingyouupforsuccessearlyinyouracademiccareer.
Itisapparentthatyourchosentopicmustbeyour
academicandintellectualpassion.Youwillbedoing
researchinthisareaforyearsinthefuture,bothwhile
youremaininthePh.D.programandduringtheearly
stagesofyourprofessionalcareer.Second,yourcom-

Webuildonpriortheoryandresearchonelectronic
brainstormingtoexaminehowachievementpriming
influencesindividualcognitionleadingtochangesin
individualbehaviorandultimatelyteamperformance.
Weconductedarepeatedmeasuresexperimentusing
electroencephalographywith53subjectsperforming
twobrainstormingtasks.Wefoundthatprimingaltered
cognitionintheleftandrightregionsofthefrontal
cortex;thatis,achievementprimingtriggeredcognition
inareasofthebrainrelatedtocreativeandinsightful
cognitionwhiletheplacebotreatmentledtocognition
inareasrelatedtolanguageproduction.Thus,priming
didnotinduce“more”cognition,butrathertriggered
changesinthenatureofcognitionthatledtosignifi-
cantlymoreideasandmoreideasthatwerehighly
novel,workable,andrelevant.Thisstudymakestwo
contributions:itshowsonetheoreticalpathwayby
whichachievementprimingworks;anditshowthat
primingusingpicturesimprovesideageneration.

Foodbanksarehumanitarianaidorganizationsthat
collect,organize,anddeliverfoodtononprofitmember
agenciesandalsotoindividualstohelpalleviatethe
society’shungerproblem.Thesupplychainoffood
banksischaracterizedbyprivatesectorcompanies,
individualdonorsandgovernmentalagenciesprovid-
ingmonetarysupportandfoodinventoryonthesupply
side,andthememberagenciessuchasfoodpantries,
soupkitchens,shelters,andvolunteersdelivering
supportonthedemandside.Withinthepurviewof
thissupplychain,foodbanksstrivetoimprovetheir
performance,whichiscommonlymeasuredinterms
oftheamountoffooddeliveredtothecommunities
inneed.Foodbanksrelyonmanagerialtalentthatis
relativelymoreconstrainedthanprivatesectorand
alsousevoluntaryworkforceforattainingtheirper-
formancegoals.Consideringtheuniqueyetpertinent
roleofhumanassetsinfoodbankstomanagetheir
supplychainintegrationinitiatives,weemployan
intellectualcapitalframeworktoanalyzethehuman,
organizational,andsocialcapitalantecedentsofsup-
plychainintegrationinfoodbanks.Specifically,we
suggestthatintellectualcapitaldrivessupplychain
integrationinhumanitarianorganizations.Moreover,
weproposespecificrelationshipsbetweenthedimen-
sionsofintellectualcapital.Acarefullycraftedsurvey
isusedtoinformourresults.Theresultsindicatethat
humancapitalsignificantlyimpactssocialcapital,
which,inturn,drivesallsupplychainintegrationdi-
mensions.Wediscusstheimplicationsofourfindings
formanagingintellectualcapitalinthenot-for-profit
sectorandofferdirectionsforfutureresearch.

equilibriumforthedynamicpricinggamemodelsof
bothsuppliersandthemanufacturerarederived,re-
spectively.Theequilibriumpricesofsuppliersandthe
manufacturercanbesolvedbasedonbothirreversible
actionsandreal-timestates.Thesetwotypesofequi-
libriacanberegardedasthesolutionsoftwodifferent

postponementforaseasonalproduct.Inthesingle-
opportunitystrategy,theretailerordersallbase-stock
priortothebeginningoftheseasonandsetstheprice
when the season begins and demand information
becomesavailable.Inthetwo-opportunitystrategy,
theretailerordersonlysomeofherstockbeforethe
season,andplacesanadditionalorderafterthesea-
sonstarts;thesecond-orderquantityandthepricesfor
eachquantityofbase-stockaredeterminedaccord-
ingtocurrentlyavailabledemandinformation.The
latterstrategycanaccommodateunexpecteddemand
changesthatoccurlateinthesellingseason.Wepro-
videsufficientconditionsinwhichthetwo-opportunity
strategyispreferabletothesingle-opportunitystrategy.
Eachproblemisanalyzedusingamultistageprogram-
mingapproach,andoptimalpricesaswellasoptimal-
ityconditionsforthedifferentbase-stocklevelsare
obtained.Incontrasttopreviousstudies,ourmodel
addressestheeffectofthetimingofthearrivalofthe
secondorderandaccountsforholdingcostsover
timeaswellasareputationpenaltyassociatedwith
lostsales.Moreover,itdoesnotignorefixedcosts
associatedwithorderplacementandprocessingof
demandinformation.Anumericalexampleandsen-
sitivityanalysisofthekeyparametersshowthatthe
ratiobetweentheoptimalexpectedprofitsobtained
underthesingle-opportunitystrategyandunderthe
two-opportunitystrategyislowerforhighervaluesof
theholdingcostsorreputationpenalty.Moreover,the
ratio is higher for later splitting points as well as for
higherfixedcosts.

Quickresponseisasupplychainpracticethatcan
helpimproveoperationsbyrespondingquicklytomar-
ketchanges.Inparticular,whenretailersareperfectly
rationalandriskneutral,quickresponseisknownto
beahighlybeneficialstrategytotheretailers.How-
ever,inpractice,retailersmaypossessdifferentkinds
ofunstableriskpreferences,whichincluderisk-averse
andrisk-seekingattitudes.Thus,retailersmaybe
stochasticallyrisksensitive.Inthisarticle,weconsider
allthesefactorssimultaneouslyandexplorehowthe
retailer’sstochasticriskpreferenceaffectsthevalues
ofquickresponsetothesupplychainanditsmem-

responseisalwaysbeneficialtothesupplychain

originalbrandmanufacturers(OBMs);however,OBMs’
increasedattentiontooutsourcingandthegrowingde-
mandinmanymarketscanresultincapacityallocation
conflictsforthecontractmanufacturers.Inthisstudy,
weconsiderascenarioinwhichtheOBMdecides
whethertooutsourcetoathird-partysupplierortoa
competitivecontractmanufacturer(CCM)whohasthe
optionofproducingacompetingproductandalsohas
limitedcapacity.Thissettingconsistsoftwolevelsof

andthenfirmssettheretailprices.Weareinterested
toinvestigatetheimpactsoftheCCM’scapacityand
theimpactsofthesetwolevelsofcompetition.We
showthattheOBMmightmultisourceitscomponent
demandonlywhencompetitioninthefinal-product
marketisintense.WealsofindthatwhenCCM’s
capacityincreases,demandmaydecreasewhilethe
retailpricemayincrease.Moreover,theCCMcan
beworseofffromhavingmorecapacity,evenwhen
CCM’scapacityisavailableforfree.Ourresultsalso
showthatdemandmayincreasewhencompetition
inthefinal-productmarketbecomesmoreintense.
Finally,wefindthatthevalueofhavingathird-party
suppliertoproducethecomponentdecreasesamid
theintensityofcompetitioninthefinal-productmarket.

Thedescribedexerciseusescompetitionandthe
promiseofasugar-hightomotivatestudentstoappre-
ciatetheimportanceloadmanagementinanintermod-
alsetting.Usingmaterialavailablefromalocalsuper-
marketorgeneralmerchandisestore,studentteams
loadtheir‘container’fortwocustomers.Onecustomer
requirespalletizedsquarecandy,andthesecond
customerrequiresbarrels(Dixiecups)ofsmallerodd
shapedcandy.Studentsreceiveaworksheetthat
containstheweightsofeachtypeofcandyintheir
customerkitpacks,thetareweightofthecontainer,
andtheapproximateweightoftheircardboardpallets.
Studentssecurethecontentsoftheirpalletswith
shrink-wrap(householdplasticwrap)andensurethat
theircargodoesn’tshiftusingdunnage(bubblewrap).
Studentscompetetoapproachbutnotexceedthe
500-grammaximumgrossweightoftheircontainer
whilemeetingtwoconstraints:withstandinga30otilt
andnomorethana20%weightdifferentialbetween
theendsofthecontainer.Adebriefreinforcesthe
importanceofourresponsibilityassupplychainpro-
fessionalsforthesafetyoftransportationandmaterial
handlingworkers.Thewinningteamisawardedextra
creditpoints,andallparticipantsareallowedtoeat
theircustomers’shipments.

Recommender-drivenOnlineLearningSystems
(ROLS)areattheforefrontofnewcomputer-based
learning.Theyincorporatemachinelearningtoallow
learning-by-doing,generatingpersonalizedrecom-
mendationsintheprocess.Thispaperdescribesthe
evaluationsofanewtypeofonlinelearningsystems,
ROLS.Thisevaluationwascarriedoutinthreephases
usingaDesignScienceResearchapproachfollowing
MarchandSmith(1995).InPhaseI,buildingtheROLS
prototypevalidatedtheconceptualframeworkused.
InPhaseII,buildinganinstantiationofROLStoteach
SQL,SQL-with-Ease,validatedtheROLSprototype.
InPhaseIII,alaboratoryexperimentevaluatedlearn-
ingoutcomesfromusingSQL-with-Easecompared
withtwoothertraditionalformsoflearning.Asetof
qualitativeinterviewscarriedoutwithlearnerssoon
afterusingthesystemconfirmedthatthesystemwas
effective.Theyindicatedthatmoreworkonfine-tuning
recommendationsgeneratedbythesystemcould
furtherimprovelearnersatisfaction.Thekeyimplica-
tionforpractitionersisthatROLShavethepotentialto
improvelearningoutcomessignificantly.Implications
forresearchersarethatevaluationsofROLS,which
includeformativeandsummativeevaluations,arees-
sentialtoimprovetheirperformanceandthatdevelop-
inginnovativeapproachestoevaluationcanadvance
theselearningtechnologies.

Studentstendtobeoverconfidentabouttheirfuture
performanceinuniversityexams,whichcanlead
todemotivationwhenfacedwithunexpectedlybad
results.Wehypothesizedthatoverconfidenceispartly
apersonalitytraitbutalsopartlyresultsfromstudents’
insufficientknowledgeofwhatisexpectedofthemin
universityexams.Itfollowsthatthisshoulddecrease
asthestudentslearnwhatisreallyrequired.Ina
longitudinalstudywith441studentsfromasouthern
Germanuniversity,weaskedstudentstosolveintel-
ligencetestquestionsandtomakeestimatesoftheir
ownperformances.Additionally,studentsestimated
theirperformanceinaforthcomingmathsand/orade-
scriptivestatisticsexam.Thenshortlyaftertheexam
wastakentheyindicatedtheirplannedandeffective
hoursofstudy.Asexpected,studentsdidnot,inthe
mean,overestimatetheirperformanceonintelligence
testquestions.Womenweremorelikelythanmento
underestimatetheirperformance.Over-orunderes-
timationinintelligencetestquestionsdid,however,
predictmisestimationinthemathsandthestatistics
exams.Also,furthercorrelationsofmisestimationbe-
tweenthestatisticsandafinancialmathematicsexam
couldbefound—assuchmisestimationcanbeinter-
pretedtobeastabletrait.Studentswithan‘Abitur’
qualificationweremorelikelytounderestimatetheir
performance,whilestudentswithotherpre-university
qualificationstendedtooverestimatetheirperfor-
mance.Noeffectofpersonalityfactorswasfound.
Againstourexpectations,studentswhohadoveresti-
matedthemselveslaterindicatedahighernumberof
hoursstudiedthanotherstudents.Wesuggestdiffer-
entstrategiesbywhichstudentsanduniversitiescan
activelycounteroverestimation.
