WhilethegroceryarmofTescousesanin-storepickingmodel,TescoDirectworkswithsuppliersusingadirect-shipmodel.In2013,TescoDirectwasprocessinghalfamillionordersayearthrough126direct-shipsuppliers.Eachsupplieruseditsownfleet,rangeofcarriersorthird-partylogisticscompanytocoordinateorderdeliveries.Onaverage,eachenquiryfromaTescocustomerrequiredeightphonecallstoformulatearesponseregardingorder status. For TescoDirect, this representedenormousadministrativecomplexity,costingthecompany£1millionannually–orbetween£2and£4perorder.

The solution Getting things moving

Tesco is on track to soon achieve 80% of its order volume coverage through theMetaPackplatform.Meanwhile,thedaysofeightfollow-upphonecallsperaverageorderenquiryarea thingof thepast; itnowtakesTescoDirectcustomerserviceson average 15 seconds to access all the tracking information required to answercustomerqueriesaboutdelivery.
