- Get to know players in your field.

- Work on good teaching practices. - Choose service commitments wisely.

GET TO KNOWYOUR TERRITORY

- Learn culture of institution & department.

- Establish connections within department.

- Find out spoken and unspoken expectations of junior faculty.

- Become familiar with tenure process.

- Know why YOU were hired. - Ensure faculty understand your research.

- Obtain annual reviews, be clear on their meaning.

- Solicit honest input from your mentor & faculty in your research area.

- Time management (block off time to work).

- Develop independent research program (can be balance of own & team work).

- Be proactive and take responsibility: contact mentors/Chair for meetings.

- Request help: reading drafts, introductions to key people in field.
