President’s Report Mary Flesberg
Welcome to the 2009-2010 School Year! We can hear the school bells ringing, or was it the arrival of the note-books, writing utensils and other school supplies at our local discount stores, signal-ing that it is time to return to school for another year. These are some tough times for schools and we may be facing some challenging days ahead, but we still get that feeling of anticipation that comes with starting off the year feeling renewed and ready for our students. Minnesota Business Edu-cators, Inc. (MBEI) Fall Convention Our fall convention “Bytes 4 Business” will be held on Oc-tober 1-2 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Moorhead. Octo-ber 1 (Thursday) will be reg-
istration and the past presi-dents’ reception. October 2 (Friday) will be registration, keynote, awards luncheon, sessions--including a tour of Microsoft, vendors, network-ing, all ending with our an-nual meeting. We invite you all to attend and you will find details and registration forms posted on our website. New Board Members We welcomed new members to our board. They are Ra-chel Cudworth (student rep-resentative), David Braaten (legislative co-chair), DJ Dahl (legislative co-chair) and Terri Pelzel (southwest division president). They are all great additions to an al-ready excellent board. We appreciate their willingness to serve the business educa-tors of our state. Awards Our state specialist, Jean Kyle, was presented the NBEA Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Con-tributions in the Supervision of Business Education 2009. Jean was recognized at the awards luncheon at the NBEA convention in Chicago in April. She was also given the BestPrep Service award. Jean works extremely hard for the business educators in
this state and we appreciate all of the time and effort she puts in to make us success-ful. Cindy Drahos, Burnsville High School, received the Teacher of Excellence award and Leah Lencowski, East-view High School, received the Carpenter award. They are very deserving of these awards and we congratulate them! National Business Educa-tion Association (NBEA) Spring Convention The Spring NBEA Conven-tion will be held March 31-April 3, 2010 in San Diego, California. The site of the convention is the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina. Registration information and details will be posted on the website listed below. The Latest News from Jean Kyle, Business Education Specialist
Welcome to the 2009 - 2010 school year. In Career and Technical Education (CTE) we will continue implement-ing Perkins IV. The new consortia structure is in place and the Minnesota state plan for CTE is available at the MnSCU website http://www.cte.mnscu.edu/ as is the Programs of Study (POS) chart and other infor-mation that may assist you at the local level as you build programs that provide oppor-tunities for students. This year MDE and MnSCU are working on a pilot project that will further the develop-ment of pathways within POS. Business and IT are
areas in the pilot this will of-fer a chance for collaboration and conversation between secondary and post second-ary instructors in these areas. “Catch the New Rhythm of CTE” and attend the 2009 ACTE annual convention and Career Tech Expo con-vention in Nashville, No-vember 19 -21, 2009, at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Convention Center, details http://www.acteonline.org/convention.aspx. This an-nual opportunity offers a strong business education strand with breakout session of interest to teachers. The opening keynote speaker ―Chef Jeff‖ Henderson will highlight this year’s conven-tion as the opening general session speaker. Henderson is an award-winning chef who has served as the ex-ecutive chef at the renowned Café Bellagio and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. What makes Henderson so re-markable is his story of going from crack dealer to top chef. Also delivering a keynote
address is Stedman Graham businessman, edu-cator, writer and speaker with a focus on maximizing leadership, achieving suc-cess and embracing diversi-ty. Professional memberships in the groups that have an in-terest in education are a way for business educators to connect to resources and advocacy networks. The As-sociation for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and the state affiliate MnACTE, the National Busi-ness Education Association (NBEA) all offer professional development opportunities for teachers and are a way to work with colleagues on is-sues of importance. As always, I extend my thanks to you for all you do for our students in Minneso-ta. Please, let me know of your interests, concerns and ideas at jean.kyle@state.mn.us.

Looking for a Smart Investment at a Bargain Price?
I may have approached you at an MBEI Convention and asked you if you were a member of the National Busi-ness Education Association (NBEA). You may have gotten an email from me reminding you to renew or ask-ing you to consider joining NBEA. What has your response been? Many think, “I will never get to attend a na-tional convention, so why should I join”. I would suggest that membership in NBEA is a very good investment even if you are not able to attend the conventions. Here are some of the benefits of membership: You will be protected from the high cost of legal actions filed against you arising out of your duties as an em-ployed educator by $250,000 professional liability insurance included automatically with your professional membership (U.S. residents only). Upgrades to $1,000,000 and $2,000,000 are available for a small annual fee. Three professional publications are also included: The Business Education Forum, NBEA's flagship journal, offers timely articles on interna-tional business, teaching ideas for trainers, technology, trends, current issues, curriculum, business ownership and management, administration and supervision, research, and student organizations. The Forum is published in October, December, February, and April. Keying In, the official newsletter of NBEA, focuses on timely topics, providing in-depth infor-mation that is vital to business educators as they prepare today's students for tomorrow's workforce. The NBEA Yearbook is published annually in May. This refereed journal focuses on a topic of current interest
to business educators. When you join NBEA, you automatically become a member of a regional association. Minnesota is a part of the North Central Business Education Association (NCBEA). NCBEA provides additional educational and networking opportunities for NBEA members, including conventions, newsletters, and more.
Go to nbea.org to learn of more benefits. So you see, the $80 membership fee returns many benefits. If you are not a member, join today to start taking advantage of these and other benefits. Use the membership form printed elsewhere in this newsletter, or join online at www.nbea.org.
Reach for the Stars! Eight years ago, NCBEA published its first Technology Activities for Business Education as a service to members and to provide additional funds for NCBEA. The publication was a success and was followed two years later by Technology Activities for Business Education Plus! 2002-2003. In 2004, Activities for Student Success was released followed by Creative Activities for YOU in Your Classroom in 2006. Currently, we are proud to offer Reach for the STARS! This publication has 45 classroom activities submitted by teachers from the North Central Region. Not on-ly will you find activities for technology, but also good, old fashioned, pen & pencil activities. All these activities are on a CD which enables you to open files and modify as needed for your classroom. I will have the Reach for the Stars! cd available at the fall MBEI convention in Moorhead. The cost at the convention is $10.

You will also want to receive The Forum, Keying In, and the Annual Yearbook. In addition, you can purchase publications such as the new Creative Teaching Ideas at a discounted member price. This publication is hot off the press and includes a variety of teaching activities you can use in your class-room. You can renew your membership online at www.nbea.org, print the online form and mail it in or copy this page and mail it with your check.
