Growing What God Has GivenThe Exciting Growth of Christ’s Church

Growth through Joyful SufferingActs 5:17-6:1

John 12:24 - Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

3 crucial understandings about Gospel suffering that give the believer a joyful stability in this world

I. Understand the ____________ for Suffering—The Gospel Contradicts All Aspects of This World’sValue System

A. The power systems of this world

B. The leaders of this world

C. The self-righteousness of man

Acts 5:38 - We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.

II. Understand the ________ in the Suffering—The Gospel Wins Every Time in Suffering

Acts 5:38-39 - So in the present case, I say to you, “stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.”

A. God’s value system is displayed

READ: 2 Samuel 1:1-2:4a; 7ASK YOUR CHILD:• How did God keep His promise to David to make

him king? After Saul’s death, David became king over Judah, and later, all Israel.

• What promise did God make to David? Among other incredible things, God promised to establish the throne of one David’s descendants (Jesus) forever.

EMPHASIZE THIS PRINCIPLE: God keeps incredible promises. Therefore, we should trust and honor him.

PRACTICE: • Trust God to keep His promises.• Thank God for His grace toward sinners.PREPARE FOR NEXT WEEK: 1 Kings 2, 3, 8, 9, 11MEMORIZE FOR JAN 6-FEB 3: “...let us consider how

to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25*

Faith Groups promote spiritual growth through meaningful Christian relationships. They encourage spiritual growth through the study of God’s

Word, being vulnerable with other Christians, group service opportunities, and additional biblical training. They meet

throughout the week and are led by various members of

Faith Church West.

More information about Adult Bible Fellowships, Faith Groups, and Neighborhood Bible Groups is available online at

faithlafayette.org/church/connect and at the welcome desk.

Neighborhood Bible Groups at the Northend

are a place of community that provide a safe place to strengthen one another’s

faith, encourage one another to good deeds, and to love and serve God and others. The groups meet throughout the week and

are led by various members of Faith Church North.

B. God’s messiah is displayed in the lives of suffering believers

Colossians 1:24 - Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.

C. Application: Does your life display hope in Christ or worldly pleasure?

Job 1:21 - He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

III. Understand the ____________ of the Suffering—The Joyful Spread of God’s Church

Acts 5:41 - So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.

Acts 5:42 - And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ…

Acts 6:1 - Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number…

Matthew 5:11-12 - Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Application: Sometimes we will never know why Christ puts us through some suffering, but we can know that it is good.

“I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me towards the rock of ages.” Charles Spurgeon

“If the greatest act of love was done through suffering (Christ dying on the cross). Then why would Christ withhold suffering from us to know Him more.” Martin Luther

Join our monthly fellowship at 10:00am, Wednesday, February 6 in the Senior Living Clubhouse. Jeff Riker, an Enthusiologist from Monessen, PA, will be entertaining and encouraging us to “let go of worry by focusing on the blessings and promises of God.” We’ll be starting promptly at 10:00am in order to give Jeff as much time as possible for his program. Catered meal to follow for $5. First time guests eat for free as do any seniors for whom the cost is a hardship.
