A Better Internet for Legal Help

Stanford Legal Design Lab @LegalDesignLabMargaret Hagan @margarethaganApril 2017

Our Driving Questions

How can Search Engines be better front doors to legal help?

How do we serve correct legal info, options, and actions to people who need help?

How do we get legal support to people on their terms, in engaging ways?

User Research Findings

People are increasingly turning to Internet search to make sense of their life problems.

Ideally, they want public, official sites to orient them and help them make a gameplan.

Currently, though search results are overwhelming, confusing, and not always correct.

Court + government sites do not have clear enough navigation, and usable design.

What if?

How to get there

Create a standard mark-up schema for legal issues, processes, and services

1

Get official, public information served up to people directly on search engine/social media pages

2

Involve leading tech platforms in civic and legal help

3

How do we connect people’s framings of problems with legal ones?

What’s a more effective Search Results design for legal help?
