Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER)How to write a scientific explanation (SP3)

Claim

Your claim is a declarative statement that is similar to a thesis. (You make a claim in response to a question).

● The claim is usually one sentence in length.

● It must be accurate, specific, and completely answer the question.

Evidence

The evidence is all of the informationthat supports your claim.● Evidence must be sufficient and relevant to your

claim. Not all information is considered evidence!

● Typically specific data/information.● Sources such as: computer simulations, websites,

textbook, class notes, personal experience, etc.● Important to have numerous pieces of evidence

to support your claim!

Reasoning

Reasoning is the explanation thatconnects your claim to the evidence that supports it.

● Explains why the information you chose counts as evidence.

● Demonstrates a detailed understanding of the concepts involved and uses science vocabulary.

● Address all evidence and is to the point.● Should be at least a few sentences in length.

GROUP ACTIVITY: 1. Read the packets you have been given and review the attached tables.2. Work with your group to answer the question. Use CER!3. Document your group’s work on poster/whiteboard.4. Gallery Walk- check out other groups’ posters while leaving 1 group member behind to explain your group’s point of view.

Due next class: First GRADE for SP3!• Using what you learned and discussed today
