9) EMERGENCY OPERATIONS

10.1) ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE AND PLANNING

1) The need for an emergency organisation and the list of the main components of the organisation such as –

- emergency command centre - emergency party - back up emergency party - engineer’s group 2) The ship’s muster list and the emergency

instructions to specify details such as -

- personnel, assembly point and basic action for each group in the emergency organisation.

- location of the equipment for each group. 3) All personnel to know their place in the

emergency organisation and to be familiar with their duties in case an emergency procedure is initiated.

4) Emergency operations to be preplanned by the organisation, and appropriate drills -

- to be held if they are to succeed. 5) An emergency plan should be

directed to – - rescue and treatment of casualties. - safeguarding others. - minimising damage to ship,

property and environment. - containing and bringing the

incident under control.

10.2 ) ALARMS 1) The fire alarm signals or general

alarm signal must be given in the case of –

- fire - collision - grounding - man overboard - major spillage of cargo liquid or

release of vapour.

- other emergency situations which call for emergency action.

2) The ship’s muster list and emergency instructions should specify details of the emergency alarm signals.

3) List of other important alarms as – - gas alarm - cargo system alarm

- CO2 alarm - Engine Room alarm - Inert Gas alarm

10.3 ) EMERGENCY PROCEDURES 1) The Ship’s muster list and emergency

instructions to specify the action to be taken by all crew members and officers in case of an emergency .

2) Emergency procedures for accidents involving cargo spillage as given in the ICS cargo data sheets.

3) Frequent drills are required for emergency procedures.

-procedures in case of : - fire - collision - grounding - leakage of water in hold or inter

barrier space. - cargo containment leakage. - burst cargo hose or pipe.

4) The general procedure in an emergency should be –

- raising the alarm - crew assembly - crew check - remedial action 5) As a member of a group simulating

a ship’s emergency organisation , plans the emergency-
