LEC Nurse Karen Bridges gives one-on-one attention to Pearl Post. A smile and a hug indicate Karen’s love of both participants and caregivers, one reason she was chosen by the Dementia Care Profession-als of America, a division of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, for its 2009 Professional Caregiver of the Year award, only the third time the award has been given. In announcing the award, Eric Hall, AFA’s president and CEO said, “It is obvious Karen Bridges has a special place in her heart for people with Alzheimer’s disease and has taken this passion to the nth degree to provide optimal care...” If you would like to read the entire press release, please call 704.484.0405.

Even amidst all the fun, there is still time for health care. Nurse Kris Frane checks Mary Boheler’s
weight and blood pressure, a part of the regular routine for the LEC nurses, who can also carry out any medical procedure the doctor might order to
be done as home health care - injections, catheter changes, wound care, therapies. Staff also provides
personal care such as bathing, shaving, hair care.
Grace Simpson enjoys the chance to be creative, whether it’s paint or pottery or collage.
These veterans enjoy getting together just to talk. Barbara Baxter enjoys facilitating the group.

Gifts for the children - Life Enrichment Center participants love playing Santa’s elves all year long as they cut, sew, stuff, dress and decorate dolls to give to children who might not have toys at Christmas. In 2009, Pat Byers, center, received about 50 of the dolls for the Prison Fellow-ship. The rest of the dolls went to various charities for distribution.
