Discovering Interests, Skills, Abilities, and Aptitudes

is the 1st step in job searching

• Interests- activities one likes to do.

• Skills- the ability to perform a task due to training or experience.

•Abilities- a skill you have already developed.

•Aptitude- the potential a person has for learning a skill.

Interests can lead to a career choice

 Most Interests fall into 3 categories:    1. People- interests include activities involving

people.   2. Information- interests include using ideas,

facts, figures, and words.    3. Technology- interests involve working with

things, such as tools, machines, and other equipment.

Quiz yourself—• Interest Inventory- designed to help you relate

your interests to occupational areas.

• Ability Assessment- measure how well you perform specific tasks and whether you can master certain skills.

• Aptitude tests- you can learn what careers you would be good at- aptitudes can be developed into skills.

   What skills are employers looking for?

    Basic Skills- Reads, writes, performs arithmetic and mathematical operations, listens, and speaks.Thinking skills- Thinks creatively, makes decisions, solves problems, visualizes, knows how to learn, and analyzes.Social Skills- skills people use to interact with others. These skills are one of the top qualities employers look for in a job candidate.
