Four former eBay Inc. employees have agreed to plead guilty to their roles in a campaign of intimi-dation that included send-ing live spiders and cock-roaches to the home of a Massachusetts couple who ran an online newsletter critical of the auction site, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

“Four former employees of #eBay are scheduled to plead guilty on Oct. 8 at 2pm via zoom in federal court in #Boston,” accord-ing to a tweet from the official account of the U.S. attorney’s office in Massachusetts. “The defen-dants are charged w/ par-ticipating in a cyberstalk-ing campaign that targeted a Massachusetts couple.”

A Kentucky grand jury has brought no charges against Louisville police for the killing of Breonna Taylor during a drug raid gone wrong. Prosecutors said Wednesday that two officers who fired their weapons at the Black woman were justified in using force to protect themselves. Instead, the only charges brought by the grand jury were three counts of wanton endan-germent against fired Officer Brett Hankison for shooting into Taylor’s neighbors’ homes. Taylor was shot multiple times by officers who burst into her home on March 13 during a narcotics investigation.

Covid-19 continues to show its presence at schools in the Red River Valley, according to a check earlier today of school district websites.

Chisum ISD joined other Lamar County schools this week with its first case of the novel coronavirus since school began a month ago. Paris ISD and North Lamar ISD continue to report new infections while Prairiland ISD reported no new cases since Sept. 18.

Clarksville ISD and Detroit ISD remain virus free while Cooper ISD

and Honey Grove ISD reported no new cases.

A Chisum Middle School stu-dent last on campus Sept. 16 tested positive for the virus along with a Chisum Elementary School staff member last on campus Sept. 18, according to an alert earlier this week on the district website.

Paris ISD is reporting that two students and two staff members at Aikin Elementary have tested posi-tive for the virus along with four students at Crockett Intermediate School and two students and a staff member at Paris High School. To date, the district has reported six

staff members and eight students with the virus with four of the six staff members recovered.

North Lamar ISD is reporting two high school students with the virus while five students have recovered. A student at Cecil Everett Elementary has tested positive along with two students and two staff members at Aaron Parker Elementary. Two staff members at the high school remain quarantined with the virus while others in the district reported ear-lier with the virus have recovered.

On Sunday, Rivercrest ISD report-ed a confirmed case at the high school. The student was present on campus on Friday, according to the district website.

“I’ve worked for several law enforcement agen-cies,” he said. “I can honestly say Chief Short is the best I’ve seen in the state of Texas. He teaches us every day. When I first took this job seven years

ago, he told me, ‘you treat everybody as you would your family, and we don’t choose who we protect and serve.’”

Short told the council he would prefer to revert back to his original contract with the city, the one from 2009, and the council saw no problem with that. As an addition, they set the contract for five years, since Short plans to retire by that time.

The council agreed to revisit the raise as part of their budget discussions at next week’s called meet-ing, to start at 5:30 p.m.

Federal investigators are looking into whether a huge wildfire near Los Angeles was sparked by Southern California Edison utility equipment, according to the company.

Edison has turned over a section of an overhead conductor from its trans-mission facility in the area where the Bobcat Fire started more than two weeks ago, company spokesman David Song said Wednesday.

The initial report of fire was near Cogswell Dam in the San Gabriel Mountains at 12:21 p.m. on Sept. 6.

In an incident report filed with the state Public Utilities Commission last week, Edison said its near-by equipment experienced

an issue five minutes ear-lier, 12:16 p.m.

A circuit at a nearby substation experienced a “relay operation,” indicat-ing its equipment detected some kind of disturbance or event, Song said.

BEIRUTLebanon: Help ‘trying to rise from its rubble’

Facing an economic meltdown and other cri-ses, Lebanon’s president on Wednesday asked for the world’s help to rebuild the capital’s main port and neighborhoods that were blown away in last month’s catastrophic explosion.

President Michel Aoun made the plea in a prere-corded speech to the U.N. General Assembly’s vir-tual summit, telling world leaders that Lebanon’s many challenges are pos-

ing an unprecedented threat to its very existence.

Most urgently, the coun-try needs the international community’s support to rebuild its economy and its destroyed port. Aoun suggested breaking up the damaged parts of the city into separate areas and so that countries that wish to help can each commit to rebuilding one.

Americans buy candy, trick or treat - or not

Americans may not know if trick or treat-ing will happen this year because of the pandemic, but they’re buying a lot of Halloween candy while they wait to find out.

U.S. sales of Halloween candy were up 13% over last year in the month end-ing Sept. 6, according to data from market research

firm IRI and the National Confectioners Association. That’s a bigger jump than the usual single-digit increases. Sales of Halloween chocolate alone are up 25%.

Earlier Halloween dis-plays at some chains, like dollar stores, Meijer and ShopRite, likely helped boost sales. But Americans may also be in a mood to celebrate after months of pandemic anxiety.

Cassandra Ambrosius, who lives in central Wisconsin, was surprised to see bags of Halloween candy at the grocery in early September; her hus-band snapped one up. She expects to buy more bags as Halloween gets closer, because she thinks people in her neighborhood will figure out how to trick or treat safely.
