Radio Waves

• Radio waves have the longest wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum.

• Radio well waves do more than bring music, they carry waves to your cell phone and television.

• The antennae on your television set receive the signal, in the form of electromagnetic waves.

Radio Waves

• Your cable companies have antennas or dishes that receive and broadcast from your local TV stations.

• Celluar phones also use radio waves to transmit information. Radio waves are colored red

• The very large array (VLA) is one of the worlds premier astronomical radio observatories.

Microwaves

A microwave are radio waves with the shortest wavelengths and the highest frequencies.

Every day example

An example is a microwave oven because it uses electromagnetic waves to heat food up.

This is a microwave that is used for transmitting information from one place to another.

Infrared Waves

Infrared light

Infrared light lies between the visible and microwave portions of the EM spectrum

The two types of infrared light are far infrared and near infrared light

Far infrared light waves are hot while near infrared light waves aren’t. A example of infrared light is a special lamp used in fast food restaurants

Thermograph

• An infrared camera takes pictures using infrared rays instead of light these pictures are called thermographs

• A thermograph shows regions of different temperatures in different colors

• Thermographs indentify the warm and cold parts of an object by analyzing infrared rays

Information:

Ultraviolet rays are rays that have shorter wavelengths than electromagnetic waves.

(UV rays.) Used to treat jaundice. A liver condition that

causes yellowing of the skin in newborn babies.

These are the rays that make us tan. We wear sunglasses to protect our eyes from

these rays.

Everyday Example:

These rays are invisible to the human eye, but some insects

such as bumblebees can actually see them!

• Electromagnetic waves with very short wavelengths are called X-Rays.

• Used to make images of bones in the body because of the high frequency that allows it to carry lots of energy.

• Too much exposure to X-Rays can cause cancer.

• Bones absorb X-Rays.

• They have higher energy than ultraviolent waves.

• Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen invented X-Rays.

• The instrument used to detect X-Rays is called the Proportional Counter Array.

• Everyday example- to detect broken bones and see how bad they are, doctors take X-Rays of the patient.

These are X-Rays of human ribs and teeth and the machine used to collect X-Rays

• Gamma rays are rays of light with the shortest wavelengths and the highest frequencies

One everyday example of gamma rays

• One everyday example of gamma rays are they can be used to examine the bodies internal structure

• Gamma rays can kill living cells, a fact which medicine uses to its advantage, using gamma rays to kill cancerous cells
