UKB to host Dayof Championsfootball camp

The United KeetoowahBand of Cherokee Indiansin Oklahoma will host aspecial camp on June 16.A Day of Champions Foot-ball Camp is led by coachKen Heupel and a specialteam of veteran coachesand players from variousstate colleges, universityand professional NFLorganizations.

Although the camp islabeled a football camp, itis open to athletes of allsports – both boys andgirls – ages 8 to 14.

The camp provides thekids coaching in athletics,mentoring on health, read-ing, fitness life choices andfocuses on the four princi-ples of leadership: disci-pline, respect, trust andhard work.

The cost of the camp isfree, and the UKB willaccept the first 150 boysand girls ages 8 -14.

Big 12 leadersdiscuss future

(AP) — Big 12 athleticdirectors emerged from asecond day of meetings onWednesday expressinghope that the league willstay intact.

But they admit they’realso looking at whatoptions they might have if itdoesn’t.

Nebraska’s TomOsborne said he hopedsomething definite mightbe known after presidentsand chancellors — whohave the final say — beginmeeting on Thursday.

The future of the 14-year-old league wasthrown into question whenthe more lucrative Big Tensaid it might look toexpand. Missouri andNebraska indicated theywould be willing to listen ifthey were invited.

Sutton courthearing delayed

(AP) — A court hearingfor former OklahomaState basketball coachSean Sutton has beendelayed by two months.

Sutton had been due toappear Monday in PayneCounty District Court for apreliminary hearing onfour felony charges alleg-ing that he illegallyobtained a series of pre-scription drugs but thathearing was postponeduntil Aug. 13.

District Attorney RobHudson says the hearingwas pushed backbecause Sutton remainsin a rehab program heentered after his arrest inFebruary.

Sutton went 39-29 intwo seasons as OklahomaState’s coach beforeresigning under pressurein April 2008. He hadinherited the program afterhis father, Eddie Sutton,stepped down following adrunk driving crash.

His preliminary hearingwas initially scheduled forApril.

With an abundance ofseniors departing and aninflux of youthful exuber-ance, Tahlequah coach DonOgden has tabbed June andJuly as “the summer ofadventure” for the THS vol-leyball team.

Following the best sea-son in school history in2009, the Lady Tigers willcharter into new territoryThursday night, beginningsummer-league competitionafter replacing nine seniors.The four weeks of playingother varsity squads -- alongwith University of Arkansasteam camp in July -- willhelp Odgen identify who hisnew rotation will be in2010.

“The adventure willbegin when we go toCatoosa and get our firstlook at our new team,” saidOgden, whose Lady Tigersmade their first-ever trip tothe Class 5A state tourna-ment in the fall. “...Andwe’ll know more on Thurs-day, and we’ll have a betterfeel of whether the playersare in the right places andwhether or not they knowhow to compete.”

Along with taking on thelikes of Coweta, Claremore,Bartlesville and others inCatoosa, the Lady Tigerswill get plenty of time onthe court with open-gym

sessions throughout thesummer.

“We’ll open up the gymfor them from 9 (a.m.) tonoon Monday throughThursday,” Ogden said of

the June and July. “Thenwe’ll have the gym openfrom 6 to 9 p.m. on Mondaynights with a few areasteams coming up, whichgives us a chance to scrim-

mage.”When the Lady Tigers

TULSA – The NEO Redmenwon their Sooner Collegiate Leagueopener 9-1 in five innings over theTulsa Diamond Jaxx Tuesday.

The Redmen spotted the Jaxx a 1-0 lead but scored three runs in thebottom of the first. Jessie Billingssingled, then scored on a pass ballfor the tying run.

Tannar Coggins walked andscored on an error for a 2-1 Redmenlead. Brandon Espinal doubled andscored on an error for a 3-1 lead.

NEO added another run in thethird as Chris Treibet walked thenscored on a fielder’s choice for a 4-1lead.Robbie Nunez singled theBillings got on base by strike outpass ball. Mike Shell got on a field-er’s choice scoring Nunez for a 5-1lead.

Treibet’s double then scored Shellfor the final run of the inning for a 6-1 lead. NEO scored three runs in thefourth as Nunez singled thenBillings sent him home from a dou-

ble for a 7-1 lead. Treibit scoredBillings from a single for the 8-1lead then Shell’s RBI double sentTreibit home for the final run for the9-1 win.

The Redmen got one base runnerin the second as Andy Phillips sin-gled but was stranded on third as theside was retired without any runsscoring.

Blake Cantrell was the winningpitcher with two scoreless inningswith three strike outs. Austin Irvine

finished the game going the last twoinnings with four strike outs. Treibitstarted and went the first inningallowing the only Diamond Jaxxrun.

With the win the Redmen are 1-0overall and in league play. NEO willplay Friday at O’Brian Park againstthe Angels at 8:30. The 19 and underteam will open play at WoodwardSaturday at 1 against the Travelersand at 3 against the SouthwestShockers.

The Tahlequah 14 andunder team swept GroveTuesday, 6-5 and 5-4.

The Tigers were led byTyler Winn with two dou-bles and four RBIs.

Winn went two-for-three in the game. ZackRedwine was also two-for-three with two RBIs.

Brock Mitchell was thewinning pitcher.

Alex Paris got the gamewinning hit in the secondgame with a two-RBI sin-gle over the right-field line.

Quinton Johnston had atwo-RBI double andColton Mashburn had anRBI single. Elijah Sted wasthe winning pitcher.

The Tigers are now 4-2in league play and 5-5overall.

Next up is league con-test at home with VerdigrisThursday at 5:30 p.m.

Legion team defeatedagainst Okmulgee County

The Tahlequah Ameri-can Legion were defeatedby the Okmulgee CountyTwins Tuesday 4-1 and 21-0.

The Tigers spotted theTwins three runs in the firstand one in the second for a4-0 lead.

Robert Holderby got asingle in the second inningbut the side was retiredbefore any runs werescored.

THS got their only runin the fourth inning as Rob-bie Blackmon walked, thenadvanced to second onHolderby’s sacrifice bunt.

Blackmon scored on atwo-base error to narrowthe Twins lead to 4-1.

The Twins’ pitchingthen shut the door on theTigers, allowing only twomore base runners: StevenWheeler walked in thesixth and Holderby walkedin the seventh.

Colin Scarsdale pitchedfive innings with eightstrike outs. Blackmon wentthe final two innings.

During the secondgame, the Tigers played alot of younger kids forexperience.

The Tigers had threebase runners in the game, aWheeler triple in the first,and Blackmon single in thethird.

Lane Cob walked in thethird.

The Tigers are now4-4-1 for the season.

Kyle Busch to make start No. 200 inNASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunday

DAYTONA BEACH,Fla. – Kyle Busch will makehis 200th NASCAR SprintCup Series start on Sundayin the Gillette FusionProGlide 500 presented byTarget at Pocono Raceway.

In doing so, at 25 years,one month and four days,Busch will become theyoungest driver in series his-tory to reach start No. 200.The previous youngest wasBrian Vickers, at 25 years,11 months and three days(Dover International Speed-way, Sept. 27, 2009).

Through the first 199races, Busch has 18 wins, 60top fives and 93 top 10s.Busch has won at least onerace in each of his six full-time seasons.

Since 1972, the ModernEra, when NASCARreduced the number of racesin its schedule, six otherdrivers have won as manyraces by their 200th start asBusch: Jeff Gordon (45);Jimmie Johnson (27); Dar-rell Waltrip (25); DaveyAllison (19), who won his19 races in 191 career starts;Tony Stewart (19); andRusty Wallace (18).
