There is a large network of hospitals, emergency centres and pharmacies. Thelargest include the Central Hospital, the
Maternity and Childhood Institute Clinic andthe Medical Teaching Institute Clinic in Almaty,
and the Spinal Centre and Hospital ofRehabilitation Treatment in Karaganda.
However, standards within the publichealthcare system have declined significantlysince the Soviet era. It is hard to ascertain thelevel of expertise of the doctors, and visitors
cannot rely on the availability of westernmedicines. Comprehensive medical insurance
is strongly advised.

Hepatitis B, C and E and tuberculosis

encephalitis have been reported in Almaty.Tick-borne encephalitis is a problem in
mountains and forests, particularly during
April, May and June. There is some
presence of rabies. For those at high risk,
vaccination before arrival should beconsidered. If you are bitten, seek medical

Vaccination is the administration of antigenic material
(a vaccine) to stimulate the immune system of an
individual to develop adaptive immunity to a disease.
Vaccines can prevent or ameliorate the effects ofinfection by many pathogens. The efficacy of
vaccination has been widely studied and verified; for
example, the influenza vaccine, the HPV vaccine and
the chicken pox vaccine among others. Vaccination isgenerally considered to be the most effective method of
preventing infectious diseases. The active agent of a
vaccine may be intact but inactivated ("attenuated")
forms of the causative pathogens (bacteria or viruses),
or purified components of the pathogen that have been
found to be highly immunogenic (e.g. the outer coat
proteins of a virus particle).
