Falls can cause serious injury and, in
some cases, even death. Training and
proper equipment is crucial for working
safely at heights. This presentation will
give you 5 guidelines for working safely at
heights.
Workplace inspection
Before any work is started, an inspection needs to be done of the job site. Make sure thatyour risk assessment includes:
• Checking that all surfaces are dry, stable and clear of clutter. Be aware of slopes.
• Verifying that all working platforms have edge protection or barriers.
• Identifying location of power lines that you may need to avoid.
• Indentifying locations that may need additional hand grips or barriers.

Equipment
• Be sure you have all the necessary equipment for
starting a job. For working at heights, such

lanyards. Inspect your safety equipment to make
sure that they are in good working condition.
• Inspect the equipment for flaws such as worn or
broken parts. Do not use damaged equipment.

• The ground below the job needs to be secured to avoid injury to anyone who may pass by. Erect barriers and use “No access” signs.
• Doing so will help you maintain a controlled environment for the workers above.
Practice safety on the job
• Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) such as a hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, steel
toe boots and a body harness.
• Although the ground below your job may be
secured, make sure all workers at heights have their
tools secured to avoid falling objects.
• Lastly, before leaving a job site, be sure that everything
is secured and all tools are put away.
