Getting your roller blind the right width

start by cutting your roller• Ifyou’rehangingtheblindinsidetherevealofyourwindow,youmighthavetocutittotherightwidthbeforefittingit.

• Firstofall,measurethewidthofthewindowspaceinsidethereveal.Then,toallowforbracketsandthecordwinder,cuttheroller38mmlessthanthewidthofthespaceyou’vemeasured.Useahacksawtothencuttheroller(fig.6)andsmooththeendwitharoundfile.

then cut your blind fabric • Usingthecutrollerasyourguide,takeapenciltomarkthefabric1.5mminfromtheendoftherollerinanumberofplacesdownthelengthofthefabric(fig.7).

• Mark1.5mminfromeachsideifyou’retrimmingbothsidesofthefabric.

• Useastraightbatten/rulertojointhemarksalongtheentirelengthofthefabric.

• Thenuseacraftknifetocutthefabricagainsttheedgeofyourbatten,andtrimtheplasticbaratthebottomoftheblind.Cutthis12.5mmlessthanthewidthofthefabricandinserttheendcapsintoeachend.

• Finally,fitthecordwinder,andyou’rereadytohangyournewblind.

The best way to hang your blind• Firstofall,insertthecordwinderendoftheblindintothebracket(squarepegintosquarehole).Then,attheoppositeend,placethedummypinintotheotherbracket.That’sprettymuchit!Justpullyourcordwindertopulltheblindupanddown.

hacksaw from slipping by covering the bit you’re

cutting with masking tape.

Picking the right blind for you Venetian blinds• Youcanchoosewhethertokeepoutlightaltogether,directitupwardsforasoft,diffusedeffect,ordirectitdownwards.

• There’sabigselectionofaluminium,PVCandwoodenVenetianblindsavailableinwidthsrangingfrom60cmto1.8m.

roller blinds• Idealifyou’reafterasoftfabriclook,ratherthanmetalorwoodenblinds.

• Therearealotofsizesavailable,sotheycanalwaysbeadjustedtofit.

• Spring-loadedblindsareabithitandmiss,somostarenowcord-operated(fig.1).Youcanfitthepullcordontheleftorright,whicheversuitsyourbest.

• Ifyou’dlikecompleteblacknessatnightandbetterinsulation,you’llbebestoffwithblackoutrollerblinds.

Fitting your roller blind• Ifyouwanttofityourrollerblindinsideawindowrecess

(fig.2)thenit’llhavetobecuttotherightwidth.Youcanalsohangitoutsidethewindowrecess(fig.3),avoidingtheproblemofprojectingwindowhandles,plantsandornamentsonyourwindowsill.

A great set of blinds will compliment your windows nicely. Putting them up is relatively straightforward, and we’ll show you how to get it done in no time at all.

The best way to measure up • Onceyou’vemadeupyourmindonhowyou’llhangyourblind,measurethewidthandthedrop(makingsurethelengthcoversthewindow).Ifyou’rehangingablindoutsidetherecess,addatleast25mmtoeithersideoftherecesstogivetheminimumwidthofyouridealblind(fig.3).

• Don’tworryifyoucan’tfindablindtofittheexactwidthofyourwindow,justbuythenextwidthupandtrimittosize(seestep5).

Fixing your brackets• Bracketscanbefixedoneitherthefaceofthewindowsurroundoratthetop.Thebracketsthatcomewithyourblindaredrilledtoallowyoutofixthemeitherway(fig.4a and 4b).

in a window recess• Youcanscrewyourbracketstoeitherthewindowframe,theadjacentwallsortheundersideofthetopofthewindow.It’snotagoodideatoscrewbracketsintoPVCwindowframes.

• Placethebracketsexactlywhereyouwanttofixthemandmarkthescrewpositionswithabradawlorpencil.Then,drillsomesmallguideholesandscrewthebracketsinplaceusingrawlplugsandscrews.Choosethecorrectrawlplugforyourwalltype(solid,plasterboardordrylinedwallsetc),thiswillensureasecurefit.

• Althoughit’stempting,don’thangtheblindabovethelintel(fig.5).Markanddrillthescrewholesinthelintelusingaheavy-dutymasonrydrillbit.Thenscrewthebracketsinplaceusingrawlplugs.

to the ceiling • Ideally,you’llhaveaceilingjoisttoscrewinto.Ifthejoistrunsat90degreestothewall,locatethepositionofthejoistsandmarkthemusingajoistfinder.Ifthejoistsareingoodpositions,screwthebracketsintotheseusingtherightrawlplugs.

Addatleast25mmtoeithersideoftherecesstofindtheideallengthofyourblind.

Youcanfitthepullcordontheleftorright. Tofityourrollerblindinsideawindowrecess,makesureit’scuttotherightwidth.

Bracketscanbefixedoneitherthefaceofthewindowsurroundorthetop.

Don’t forget to think about window handles or

tiles when you’re working out how to hang your

blinds. You’ll need to plan around them to get

the right fit.
