5-2 Rates
A rate is a ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units.
A unit rate is a rate whose denominator is 1. To change a rate to a unit rate, divide both the numerator and denominator by the denominator.
We use the key word per or the division symbol / to indicate a unit rate.
For example: If a student earns $7.65 per hour, it is the same as $7.65/hour, and means $7.65 for every
hour of work.
On a bicycle you can travel 20 miles in 4 hours. What are the unit rates in this situation, (the distance you can travel in 1 hour and the
amount of time required to travel 1 mile)?
