This is where a client would meet with a therapist and discuss things privately relating to addiction and recovery and any side issues that they might have.

Most treatment centers (though not all of them) bring in 12 step meetings such as AA or NA from the outside in order to have their clients attend meetings. Some addiction treatment centers take the clients out to real meetings on the outside, too. Treatment centers that use an alternative to 12 step programs usually have some form of group therapy in their place.

This would be where the drug addict or alcoholic comes into treatment maybe 3 to 5 days per week, attends all lectures and groups, and then returns to their home each night rather than stay in the residential treatment center. This is obviously cheaper than inpatient rehab but not as safe in terms of avoiding temptation and relapse.

One of the important things for recovering addicts to grasp a hold of is to find what works for them and then leverage that in their recovery. For example, if one on one counseling sessions seem to really help a person, then they should not be steered away from this and think that they need to focus exclusively on group therapy meetings in order to recover. They should use what works best for them, and what will help them to grow the most.
