It is a military aircraft used to attack other aircraft. It is unlike to a bomber which attacks ground targets by dropping bombs.

They are comparatively small and highly manoeuvrable. They have been fitted with increasingly sophisticated tracking and weapons systems to intercept and attack other aircrafts.

In WWI , fighter aircraft was used to hunt down enemy reconnaissance and balloon . Engine power was low.

In WWII, fighter aircraft became important in terrorising the sky, notably in the case of the blitzkrieg. Engine power improved.
