BLENDED LEARNING

21ST CENTURY’S REQUIREMENT

Sanjaykumar PatelPrincipal, DIVYAPATH CAMPUS

Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Intro…

Have done M.Sc. with Mathematics and also got the Master Degree in Education.

I Started my career as a Mathematics Teacher in 1994.

Started use of ICT in my own school .....in 2007....

Journey

20 yrs Journey in educational field

Have been witnessed - Chalk and Talk Method Floppy to be inserted in CPU..in 2001 Use of CD in classroom Use of DVD which stores more data Widely use of Pen Drive Smart Class Systems...

After learning in regular school classroom, students become helpless if they have the doubts. They will have to wait one or two days till the school teacher meets in school to solve their doubts.

Smart Class and further

Before-2 years Educomp Smart Class system in my school Not Happy with content as well the delivery structure also.

1000 schools in Gujarat – use smart class systems...

Educomp/Edurite/HCL/LearnNext etc. And in India many schools are there who search for the good options in future for their kids, the future citizens...

And I think still the connected people are not fully satisfied with all these...

First thought of Blended Learning

As a solution of it, if they will be given the specific system for the revision where they are free to use it anytime and anywhere.

As a result of it,

concept of Blended Learning came in my mind

before 13 months.

Face to Face LearningRegular Classroom Teaching

●Full group lessons ● One Teacher-Many students…Individual Perception + Learning Speed ● Marked assignments ● Learning centers or other room arrangements ● Class discussions ● Face-to-face group work ● Paper-and-pencil tests & assignments submitted in person ● Live presentations, labs, performances, or exhibits of skill ● Models, works of art, posters, and other physical artifacts submitted

in person

Online Learning

● Digital course materials ● Online discussions and Online calendars ● News announcements ● Online MCQs with Drop boxes ● Web conferences ● Online group work ● E-mail & Instant messages ● Assignments, such as Essays, Worksheets, Slide-shows…

Definition of Blended Learning…

Blended learning courses combine online and classroom learning activities and resources in an optimal way to improve student learning outcomes and to address important institutional issues.

Two Models of

Blended Learning

[1] Pull / Self-paced Learning:

Almost similar to online learning... Pre-recorded Video sessions in a different way.

This model provides structured & indexed digital learning material delivered through a web / mobile portal in a planned manner.

The objective is to mostly provide the learners with supplement educational material to be consumed in their own time and pace.

The key advantage of this model is access and availability of the

quality resources, anytime anywhere learning opportunity, and self-paced delivery.

Gujarat, Kaprara, a tribal village

In Gujarat, near Surat, Kaprara...

-a tribal school where 180 students of Std.-VIII,IX,X are taking the benefit of this since last 2 months.

-Lack of Teachers in Maths, Science, SS there.

More with BL…

In Ahmedabad, almost there are 3350 students are taking the benefit of this since last four months… Std-XII-Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

[2] Technology assisted Instructional based Learning:

Educational content tailored for the class-room/group based delivery is provided.

The objective is to complement classroom learning with lectures or content from the subject experts weaved conveniently into curriculum learning delivered by the local teacher.

The advantage of this model brings is to help plug key competency / resource gap at regional level.

The content is mixed with classroom delivery and activities in order to deliver holistic learning to students.

Gujarat-Bilimora

Right now we have started one model in Bilimora which is 250 km far from Ahmedabad and all technology support is provided from Ahmedabad.

Weekly 9 hours coaching is there for JEE-Main which includes 6 hours pre-recorded video lectures and 3 hours live sessions with the help of expert faculty form Ahmedabad. 30 students are studying right now by this way. And all they are happy.

we started this experiment in November 2013.

Some of the Disadvantages of Blended Learning

Students who are not highly motivated or have poor study habits, may fall behind and find it difficult to stay up with the required work.

Students may feel isolated from their instructor and other students.

Slow internet connections may make it difficult or time consuming to access online course materials.

Classes that require hands-on lab work may be difficult to simulate in an online class.

Students who don't have good digital file management skills may or with beginner level computer skills may find the complexity of file downloads difficult and hard to keep organized.

Instructors may not always be available at times that are convenient for students.---

Conclusion

With our current experience we find the blended

model quiet effective for certain form of courses where both lack of subject matter expertise availability and result oriented study is established.

For example Engineering entrance, Medical Entrance, CA/CS, Banking, etc.ion ....This type of learning does not bore the children and engrosses them in studying.
