(a) Pre-Course Medical Screening

Your child/ward will need to be certified fit by a medical doctor to attend the MOE-OBS Challenge Programme.

Why is there a need for medical screening?

- To establish current and accurate health status to determine individual’s suitability for programme

- To determine how best to provide a suitable level of care, especially for individuals with existing conditions

- To help parents make an informed decision on child’s/ward’s participation in programme based on current health status of child/ward

Medical Screening

• All students are required to be certified fit by a medical doctor to attend the 5-day course.

Cost of medical screening will be borne by the school, unless:

- Your child/ward does not show up on the day of the screening

- You prefer to take your child/ward to your preferred GP

• Tetanus vaccination is compulsory

(b) During Course

Management of your child’s well-beingWhat are the measures put in place?

- Instructors will conduct daily and pre-activity check and will monitor your child’s well-being.

- There is a 24-hr medical centre in OBS with nurse practitioner on standby to provide medical support.

- MOE-OBS will carry out/seek any medical treatment deemed necessary to maintain your child’s well-being.

- Ensure ALL fields in the Course Registration Form are completed

*Parents to note:

- Medical check-up has to be done within 6 months of start date of course.

- Fill in relevant sections of form BEFOREmedical screening, but DO NOT give consent yet.

- After medical screening, acknowledge the medical report BEFORE consenting to your child’s participation.

- Date of consent must be AFTER date of medical screening

What are the sleeping arrangements for this Course?

A:

A variety of tents are used (e.g. 12-man teepee tents, 4-man tents, etc.). Regardless of the type of tents used, the students are always separated by gender for their sleeping arrangements.

What sort of meals will my child/ward be having during the Course?

A:

Food rations will be provided. These may include udon noodles, instant noodles, Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs), biscuits, canned food etc.

What will be my child/ward’s source of water be?

A:

Filtered water from the OBS reservoir on Pulau Ubin (if they are on Ubin) and potable water from water coolers (if they are on mainland SG).

Q:

What happens if my child falls ill halfway through the Course?

A:

If students face any discomfort during the course, they can alert the OBS staff members (just like during PE lessons). Students will be referred to the OBS Medical Centre (where necessary) for assessment and monitoring and will be given time-out from the course (where necessary) before re-joining the course.

If necessary, the child will be brought to a polyclinic or KKWCH for medical attention and the School Programme Coordinator will be informed.

In the event that the participant is unwell and unable to continue with the course, he/she will be taken out of the course.

Is there a number to call if I urgently need to reach my child in the event of a family emergency?

A:

Please contact the school and me in such an event so that we can get in touch with the OBS Programme Manager.
