3 PASTORAL INTERN

There are a lot of theologians out there and it can oPen be overwhelming to

see the list and know which ones are the most important. I wanted to high-

light one theologian that I have found to be influenKal in my own life and has

impacted the Lutheran church as a whole. His name is Dietrich Bonhoeffer.*

Bonhoeffer was a German and a Lutheran minister in Germany during World

War II. From the outset he was against Adolf Hitler and openly criKcized him

just two days aPer Hitler won the 1933 elecKon. He fought against the perse-

cuKon of the Jewish people and the places where Nazism began to influence

the Lutheran church in Germany. Eventually, Bonhoeffer and others split away

from the exisKng church that Nazism had infected.

APer this, he moved around Germany and Eastern Europe and also spent Kme in London and the

United States. Leading up to World War II, Bonhoeffer was a pacifist and held strong with that belief

unKl the middle of the War where he made the decision that pacifism was not the answer in the face

of the Nazi regime and led him to state “[s]ilence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us

guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

He was arrested when he was aZempKng to help German Jews escape to Switzerland and was placed

in prison. It was only unKl he was Ked to an assassinaKon aZempt on Hitler that he was moved to a

concentraKon camp. He was eventually hung a month before World War II ended.

The book that has helped mold my faith is The Cost of Discipleship. In this book, Bonhoeffer makes

the asserKons that we need to take acKon in order to put into pracKce what the Gospels teach us

and that we need to focus on forgiveness and spiritual acKons that allow us to open ourselves to

God.

If you want to read more about Bonhoeffer, I recommend the book Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr,

Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas. This is a basic biography on Bonhoeffer and does explain some of his

theology. One book by Bonhoeffer that Wartburg has all the students read is Life Together as a way

to explore what ChrisKan community should look like and is fairly accessible to someone without a

theological educaKon. The Cost of Discipleship is a harder read, but Bonhoeffer’s Leers and Papers

from Prison falls between the two in terms of readability.

Should you want to discuss Bonhoeffer further, please reach out and I am more than willing to sit

down and talk.

In Christ,

Pastoral Intern Alfi WyaZ
