Can you believe it? We are getting close to being halfway through
the school year. Before you know it, we will be at the end of this
school year. This is the time to kick things into gear at school, so
that you are not scrambling when it comes to the end of the year.
We are at that time of year, when we can think about all the things
we are thankful for. Can you think about a world where you were
not allowed to go to school, learn how to read, or even have the
opportunity to go to college? There are so many people in this
world who are not allowed, to do those things, which we may
think of as being so accessible.

Although, you may think that not going to school would be great, in all reality, you
would miss it, or even want to go to school if it was not available.
Please remember that you are blessed to have those opportunities. We live in a place
that encourages us and wants us to learn and succeed in our life. The TRiO Upward
Bound is rooting for you, and wants you to succeed. We are here to help you make
your educational goals a reality. Getting an education is not easy. It requires a lot of
hard work, but it is a blessing. If you need help with anything, please contact me, or
your UB advisor in your school. We want to see you succeed. We also want you to
take advantage of all the opportunities that are out there. I hope you have a great
holiday season. Take a little time this month to think of all those things that you are
grateful for in your life. I think you may find that you have more blessings than you
think you do. I wish you all a happy holiday season.
We have welcomed a lot of new faces into Upward
Bound at Uintah High and are looking forward to
getting to know our new members. Lately we have
been learning about common college terminology.
More specifically, we have learned about the different
degree options in higher education and of the structure
of a university that consists of colleges, schools, and
degree programs. Students have been encouraged to
start researching degree options now to identify which
degree programs align with their career interests.
Our seniors have been actively applying to different
schools and applying for scholarships and other
financial aid. Many of our seniors have already been
accepted into schools and programs.

Being organized is the best thing you can do for
yourself and your schooling! Everywhere you look,
whether online or in the stores, you can find hundreds,
if not thousands of people trying to sell you the
“perfect method.” In reality, the perfect method is the
one that works for YOU. As advisors, we are able,
willing, and very happy to help you find your
organization method, if you haven’t found it yet.
Consistency is the key, along with getting enough
sleep, eating the proper foods, and trying to manage
your stress.
Did you know that hypoglycemia AND celiac disease
can both be brought on (if you weren’t born with them)
by not managing your stress?!? Being organized with
your schoolwork can be a HUGE stress reliever on its
own, and can help you with some of those other things
that are causing you stress. Don’t be afraid to ask for
help from the people who care about you, and who
have some experience with this-we’re ready to help!

HIGH SCHOOLS
Can you believe we are already half way through
another school year? What are you doing to make the
most of it?
Seniors, have you decided what college you are going
to? Have you applied to more than one? It is a good
idea to apply to more than one school and see what
types of scholarships they offer you. Don’t rule out
junior colleges. Many of the junior colleges in the
state have tuition costs that are much less than the 4-
year universities. Also, be aware that some of those
universities have transfer scholarships. For example,
if you were go to Snow College and do well, you can
transfer to a 4-year University with a transfer
scholarship that could pay for most if not all your
tuition.
You younger students need to start thinking ahead for
scholarships as well. The Utah Regent’s Scholarship is
a scholarship that you should investigate early in your
high school career. Read more about this amazing
scholarship at stepuputah.com. Unlike traditional
scholarships where there are only a few recipients, this
scholarship is awarded to everyone that completes
each of the requirements.
As always your Upward Bound advisor is here to help
with scholarships or any type of help you might need.
Work hard and keep those grades up. That hard work
will pay off when you are applying for scholarships.

Your seniors should have already been working with me to
apply at colleges they are interested in attending, and filling
out as many scholarships as they can! PLEASE! It is free
money for college! Over 8 Billion dollars when
unaccounted for last year, because of not submitting your
scholarships! Encouragement is crucial! UB students can
fill out apps and scholarships in my office, and they will be
excused from their class! However, they will not be excused
every week to miss a class they do not like. Last year, we
had a senior graduate with his Associates, and we can do it
again, with your support!
My 9-11 grades are doing great! My focus with them is to
be more committed to their education and taking on their
life!
We have summer applications available! Please encourage
your students to gain college credits this way! I enjoy
teaching and advising them, but they need to come to the
activities! They no longer can just sign in, and not
participate! Thank you so much for being in UB!

Activity!

the Autism Center.
Many families choose to participate in service opportunities
during the holidays. Did you know that you can include this
service in both college and scholarship applications? If you are
able to do any of the organizing/arranging of the service
opportunities, that can also be included as leadership!
The good news for the graduating class of 2018 is that the job market for college grads is hot and should
continue to expand. One report on college recruiting trends noted that all economic indicators pointed to a
long period of sustained job growth.4 And in a survey of hiring managers, almost two-thirds of respondents said
they plan to hire recent college graduates this year.1
