74th RUNNING 2017 FIA WRC: ROUND 8
Rally Poland
49 entries
1422,36km including 326,64km
divided into 23 stages
one of the sport’s longest-standing events
Michelin has a factory in Olsztyn, less than 100km from Mikolajki
Michelin has won the past three Rally Polands to have counted
towards the WRC. It also won the 2012 event (an ERC qualifier) with
Lappi (Skoda).
Jacques Morelli,
Manager of Michelin Motorsport’s WRC
programme
“Rally Poland’s stages are very fast and the ground is
quite sandy, so they are not too hard-wearing. As a result,
the nominated tyre is the soft-compound version of the
Michelin LTX Force. That said, the roads are covered with
loose gravel which penalises the first crews on the road.
The weather could be wet, however, and rain would hand
a distinct advantage to the early runners.”
RALLY POLANDAlong with the Rallye Monte-Carlo, Rally Poland
is one of the sport’s longest-standing events
It is being organised for the 74th time this year
The inaugural Rally Poland in 1921 was a 600km run from Warsaw to Białowieza
The event has been based in Poland’s Masurian Lake District since 2005
Rally Poland counted towards the European Rally Championship from 1974 to 2008
The 4,500km route of the 1939 event looped the entire country
Rally Poland is one of the fastest rounds on the WRC calendar: the winners’ average
speed in 2015 was 121.4kph
MISCELLANEOUS
The Masurian Lake District is a favourite holiday destination for Varsovians
Goldap runs close to the Russian border and the Kaliningrad enclave, famous for its amber production
Masuria once belonged to Prussia. Germany handed it back to Poland in compliance
with the terms of the Yalta Conference
There are some 4,000 lakes in Masuria
TEAMS / DRIVERS
Andreas Mikkelsen is standing in for Kris Meeke in the N°7 Citroën C3 WRC/Michelin
World Rally Car debut for Finn Teemu Suninen (Ford Fiesta RS WRC)
FORMATDistance: 1,422.63km, including 326.64km divided into 23 stages
Pozezdrze (24.28km) and Orzisz (11.15km) are new
Baranowo (15.55km) and Wieliczki (15.96km) have been modified
Goldap (14.75km) and Stare-Juchy (13.50km) are identical to 2016
The Mikolajki Arena super-special is a mixed-surface stage (gravel/asphalt)
Goldap passes close to Poland’s border with Russia
Rally Poland features extremely fast and generally narrow stages that crisscross fields.
There are no big jumps as in Finland, but there are plenty of highly tricky blind crests. The roads tend to be carpeted with a thin top-coating of loose gravel which the first
cars on the road sweep aside. Running order consequently plays a big role.
