BOB KENNEDY MEN’S XC & TRACK 1988-1992 IU ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME 10x ALL-AMERICAN 4x NCAA CHAMPION 3x AMERICAN RECORD HOLDER 2x OLYMPIAN
Twenty-eight years ago I received a scholarship to run track and cross country for Indiana. As a 17 year old, I was excited to get to Bloomington and start running for the legendary Coach Sam Bell. If you asked me then what I hoped to get out of it I would have said a good education and, if I’m really lucky, a Big Ten or NCAA Championship. What I walked away with was so much more.
PROCESS was taught to me on rainy days at the track listening to Coach Bell tell me that I couldn’t expect to do something in a race I hadn’t already done in training.
PERSEVERANCE was taught to me on long bus rides back to B-town when Coach would pull me into the seat next to him and talk about not getting ahead of myself and to trust in the process.
ACCOUNTABILITY was taught to me in Coach’s office as he would remind me that only I could decide how good I was going to be. Nobody else could do that for me.
CONFIDENCE to risk sacrificing good in order to shoot for greatness was taught to me on a plane home from a disappointing 5th at the NCAA Championships when Coach asked me if, sitting on this plane right now, I was happy with 5th or would I feel better had I taken the risks necessary to win but ended up finishing 8th.
These were the gifts given to me as an IU student-athlete, and when you donate to the Varsity Club, they are the gifts you’re giving to current student-athletes. You are providing them the opportunity to learn how to succeed, how to hang in there when it gets tough, how to hold themselves accountable for results and how to shoot for the stars. I think it’s safe to say that we all benefit from people with these qualities in our communities.
I have been a Varsity Club donor for more than twenty years, fully aware that most student-athletes won’t make a living in their sport after graduation. The reason I give is because I believe that the lessons learned on the track, in the locker rooms or on those long bus rides provide them with a better opportunity to do great things with their lives!
Thank you for your continued support! GO IU!!

1947 OLD OAKEN BUCKETFootball has won the Old Oaken Bucket Game three straight years for the first time since 1947.
For the first time in 23 years, and for just the second time in school history, IU qualified for a bowl game and both the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournament in basketball.
IU was one of just 10 schools in the country to make a bowl game and both the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournament in basketball.
Tom Crean (men’s basketball), Teri Moren (women’s basketball), and Ray Looze (women’s and men’s swimming) were named Big Ten Coach of the Year in their respective sports. Crean was the first IU coach to win the award in men’s basketball in 27 years, while Moren was the first in women’s basketball in 33 years. Four conference coaches of the year is tied for the second most in school history.
Men’s basketball won the Big Ten title outright by two full games. This marked the program’s second outright title in the last four years. Before that, it had been 20 years since an outright title had been won.
IU men’s and women’s basketball teams went undefeated at home in the same year for the first time in school history, and IU was the only school in the country to have both teams go undefeated at home.
Football qualified for a bowl game for the first time since 2007.
Dan Feeney and Jason Spriggs were named All-Americans in football. They were the first offensive line tandem to secure first team honors in program history in the same year and 2015 marked the first time in 47 years that IU football had two first team All-American selections in the same season.
Women’s basketball qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 14 years and won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in 33 years.
Diving coach Drew Johansen was selected as the head coach of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Diving Team.
Swimming coach Ray Looze was named to Team USA’s coaching staff and served as an assistant coach for the women’s team for the 2016 Olympics.
Indiana had 15 current or former student-athletes participate in the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Women’s Swimming and Diving finished seventh at NCAA’s for the school’s best ever finish.
Freshman breaststroker Lilly King won two NCAA Championships, set the American Record in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, and was named National Swimmer of the Year.
Men’s soccer qualified for NCAA Tournament for the 29th straight season, which is the longest streak in history.
Men’s soccer reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament setting a national record of 33 appearances.
243 students were named Academic All-Big Ten (up from 225 last year), including a record 117 from spring sports.
67 students were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.
38 student-athletes earn All-America honors.
Four athletics programs from Indiana University are among an elite group of Division I sports teams earning NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) public recognition from the NCAA, including: men’s golf, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and volleyball. These teams posted multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
WHAT A YEAR FOR INDIANA
Raising money for student scholarships is a huge part of what we do. However, growing our Hoosier family is just as important. This is where you come in! The Ambassador Referral Program is all about rewarding you for what you do naturally. Spread your enthusiasm for all things IU to your friends and acquaintances. Give them our phone number or website. Tell them our students are working hard in the gym, the classroom and out in the community but they could always use more help. It’s that easy.
In addition to the rewards above, you will receive three non-accumulative priority points for every $100 in gifts from every new Varsity Club donor you refer.

As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Indiana University must abide by NCAA rules and regulations as they relate to all aspects of its athletic program. In addition to ensuring that all of our coaches, administrators, faculty, staff and student-athletes are aware of the following NCAA rules, IU is also responsible for providing NCAA rules education to individuals who are members of our athletics donor groups or meet the definition of “representative of athletic interests.” A violation by an athletics representative may result in severe sanctions against Indiana University (e.g. loss of scholarships, post-season bans and head or assistant coaching suspensions).
The information below is an attempt to provide you with basic definitions and “permissible and impermissible activities” regarding representatives of athletics interests.
Who is a representative of Indiana University Athletics interests?
The NCAA recognizes you as a booster or representative of the athletics department if:
• You have made financial contributions to Indiana University Athletics or to an athletics booster organization of Indiana University.
• You have assisted or been requested (by the athletic department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospects.
• You have assisted or are assisting in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families.
Once a booster; always a booster.
Per NCAA rules, once an individual has been identified as a “representative of the institution’s athletics interests,” the individual retains that identity indefinitely, regardless of when you were involved with the athletics department.
Who is a prospective student-athlete?
A prospective student-athlete is any student who is in high school (9-12 grades, 7-12 grades for men’s basketball) or is attending a two-year college, regardless of whether or not IU is recruiting that individual. All NCAA regulations concerning contact with a prospective student-athlete are applicable until the prospect reports for the first day of practice or the first day of college enrollment, whichever is earliest and regardless of whether or not the prospect signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI).
NCAA rules regarding contacts and benefits for prospective and current student-athletes:
You may…
• Forward information about prospective student-athletes to the appropriate coaching staff.
• View a prospective student-athlete’s athletic contest at your own initiative provided you do not contact the prospect or his/her parents. In addition, you may not contact a prospect’s coach, principal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the prospect.
• Continue established family relationships with friends and neighbors of prospects. Contacts with sons or daughters of these families are permitted as long as they are not made for recruiting purposes or encouraged by Indiana University coaches.
• Employ a current student-athlete provided the employment is pre-approved by the IU Athletics Compliance Office.
• Provide a current student-athlete with a meal on-campus or at your home provided the meal is pre-approved by the IU Athletics Compliance Office.
You may not…
• Make contact with a prospective student-athlete and his/her parents when the prospect is on campus for an official or unofficial visit.
• Contact a prospective student-athlete to encourage attendance at or congratulate him/her on commitment to attend Indiana University. Contact includes all forms of in-person, phone, email and social media contact.
• Transport, pay or arrange for payment of expenses for a prospective or current student-athlete and his/her relatives or friends to visit campus (or elsewhere).
• Provide ANYTHING to a prospect, the prospect’s family or friends without prior approval from the Compliance Office. This prohibition extends to congratulatory, birthday and graduation cards and gifts.
• Use the names, pictures or appearances of an enrolled student-athlete to advertise, recommend or promote sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind unless pre-approved by the IU Athletics Compliance Office.
Thank you!
It is nearly impossible to provide information on all situations that may arise as they relate to representatives of athletics interests. Should you have questions regarding specific scenarios, please do not hesitate to contact the IU Athletics Compliance Office (iucomply@indiana.edu) with questions, concerns or for additional guidance. Indiana University Athletics appreciates your continued support of our teams, student-athletes and coaches. Your assistance is crucial in helping IU play by the rules!
