ART JOHNSON17th Year
Head Coach
Art Johnson is in his 17th season as head coach of the Owens men's soccer program.
In 2013, Johnson led the Express to a 15-6-1 record and the program's first ap-pearance in the Region XII tournament championship game since 2007. They also won the program's most games in a single season since 2007 and their 15 wins was the third most in a single season.
Following the season ending Region XII tournament championship game loss to Cincinnati State, the Express had five players selected All-OCCAC, three selected All-Region XII and Troy Watson was named the OCCAC Defen-sive Player of the Year. Freshman Bjion Campbell was named to the Region XII all-tourney team.
In 2012, the Express finished 14-6-1 as Johnson led the program to its first ever OCCAC championship while being named OCCAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time (2002, 2003, 2006, 2011). The season came to an end with a loss in the Region XII semifinals to Cincinnati
State. The team did, however, achieve the program's fourth highest win total in a single season, and they captured the Lincoln Land Tournament Champi-onship.
Since beginning the program in 1998, Johnson-led teams have compiled a 181-129-18 overall record. Through the 2013-14 season, Johnson has coached two NJCAA Athletic All-Americans (Glen-roy Miller - 2012 and Sean Bucknor - 2006 and 2007), 11 NJCAA Academic All-Americans and one NSCAA Athletic All-American.
Additionally, Johnson has produced 68 All-OCCAC honorees, 48 All-Region XII recipients, five OCCAC Offensive Player of the Year winners, five OCCAC Defen-sive Player of the Year honorees, three OCCAC Players of the Year, and one OC-CAC Midfielder of the Year.
In 2012, the Express swept every OC-CAC award possible. Moreover, Johnson coached the three highest vote getters in OCCAC postseason award voting in Glenroy Miller, Nickyle Webber and Juavanie Cole.
Personally, Johnson was named Region XII Coach of the Year in 2005.
Prior to coming to Owens, Johnson was a 19-year veteran of the St. John's Jesuit High School soccer program. In 12 sea-sons as head coach, he compiled a 150-51-20 record. He was named the 1997 Division I Ohio private school Coach of the Year.
Johnson is a native of Rochester, N.Y., and played soccer at Monroe Community College in 1975. He graduated from Ohio University in 1978, where he captained the
team as a senior. The Toledo resident returned as an assistant the following season.

Toledo, OH---Lake Michigan Col-lege jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half before hanging on for a 3-2 upset of the Express men’s soccer team today.
Lake Michigan’s Jose Perez and Ross Smith scored at the 10:49 and 22:48 marks to put their team up 2-0 early. Smith’s goal came on a direct kick following a foul deep in Express territory.
Ahmad Jarrar, who had several scoring chances in the first half, then scored on a well-executed cross from Vijay Gentles to pull the Express within one at the 30:10 mark.
Perez then opened the second half with a difficult goal from the far left side of the field at the 49:34 mark to make it 3-1. He crossed the ball from the left into the top right corner of the net as Express goalkeeper Joshua Kleinow had no chance at saving the ball.
A short time later, Express mid-fielder Jacob Martin was taken down in the box, resulting in a pen-alty kick goal at the 60:33 mark. However, it would be the final goal of the game - despite several late chances for the Express that either went high, wide or got saved.
Kleinow saved five shots in goal, while Lake Michigan’s Danny Mar-tinez had six saves.
