The Tale of Two Hearts

Luke 10:26 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

1 Samuel 9.2

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

1. Saul disobeyed God’s word.

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

1 Samuel 13:8 He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter.

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

9So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings”

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

10And Saul offered up the burnt offering. Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

11“What have you done?” asked Samuel. Saul replied,

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

“When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Micmash,

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

12I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

13“You acted foolishly,” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you;

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

14But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people,

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

1 Samuel 15

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

2. Saul’s success turned to pride.

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

1 Samuel 15:22 To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

SAUL, A WORLDLY HEART

Because you have rejected the word of the Lord he has rejected you as king.

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

Acts 13:21 Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years.

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

22After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him:

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

1. David loved the word of God.

2 Samuel 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied, "The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die."

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

Psalm 51:3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

4Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight,

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

5so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

10Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

11Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

12Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

DAVID, A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

13Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.
