How can my store participate? Here's the How-To, Step-by -Step Process.

GETTING STARTED WITH A BUY LOCAL FOOD PROGRAM

1. Obtain the latest Something Special from Wisconsin™ Wholesale Catalog from either DATCP (datcpssfw@wi.gov) or the Wisconsin Grocers Association (888-342-5942). You can also visit www.somethingspecialwi.com to identify Wisconsin suppliers.

2. Using the SSfW™ Wholesale Catalog as a guide, take an inventory of Wisconsin products in your store. If there are gaps or missing products, use the catalog to bring in additional suppliers/products.

3. Let your Wisconsin suppliers know you welcome their SSfW™ point-of-sale materials. Contact SSfW™ at datcpssfw@wi.gov for support in communicating with SSfW™ members.

4. Join Something Special from Wisconsin™.

• By joining, grocers can order their own SSfW™ POS materials and apply them to SSfW™ member products

• Products made in-store can qualify for the program (example: bakery, sausage, etc)

• Private label products made in Wisconsin for your store also qualify (example: bread, dairy, sausage, etc)

5. Kick-off your Buy Local Food program with a product sampling event.

• Contact SSfW™ or the WGA for more advice on how to organize a successful event; or contact one of the four WGA members who has already done a SSfW™ Buy Local Food event.

6. Make it your own with your local suppliers.

• Every store is unique. Your innovations in promoting Buy Local Food will set you apart.

KEYS TO RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL BUY LOCAL FOOD PROGRAM

1. Be patient. Buy Local Food as a promotional program is new for suppliers, grocers and customers.

2. Communication. Be clear in your expectations of suppliers in terms of their participation and assistance with the event. Know their expectations as well.

3. Merchandising.

• Highlight Wisconsin products with special displays around the store using SSfW™ signage as well as materials from your local supplier

• Rotate displays with seasonal and topical themes (example: Packers tailgate)

• Ask suppliers to offer specials in exchange for dis-play opportunities

• Information - provide supplier location and other company info as space permits

• Photos - nothing conveys the people behind the product better

• It’s more than just the produce section

4. Advertising. Work the SSfW™ logo and supplier logos into your weekly ads, store/window banners, shelf hangers. Contact SSfW™ for examples at datcpssfw@wi.gov.

5. Regular sampling events.

• Identify suppliers in your area that are easy to work with and want the opportunity to put their products in front of your customers

• It's important that demo people are very knowledge-able about the product

• It is also important that all store staff know and un-derstand the event before the day of the event

For more information about Something Special from Wisconsin™ please contact Lois Federman at datcpssfw@wi.gov. For grocer related information, contact Brandon Scholz at the Wisconsin Grocers Association at 888-342-5942

It’s a win-win situation when Something Special from Wisconsin™ connects producers, grocers and consumers. Lois Federman, Senior Agriculture Marketing Specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and Director of Something Special from Wisconsin™, says, “Consumers care what’s in their food and where it comes from. Putting your customer first benefits everyone. When you identify locally grown and produced products, you make it easier for your customer to buy Wisconsin and support the local economy.” How can you grow the momentum? Federman says more of everything is still needed. “We need more grocers willing to put Wisconsin products in their stores, including value-added and fresh products across all categories. The good news is that Something Special from Wisconsin™ is building momentum. Founded in 1983, membership is up by 50 percent since 2009.”

Understand the market

Promoting Wisconsin products is a no-brainer for grocers who have been doing just that. Ken Riley, general manager with Daniel’s Sentry (five stores including two Janesville stores) said they showcased Something Special from Wisconsin™ at a products tasting event at both the Janesville stores. “It was a big success—it drew big crowds,” he says. That’s one big reason why getting involved in Something Special from Wisconsin™ can make a big difference for both vendors and grocers. “The benefits for the grocer are huge,” says Riley. “They have a state-wide advertising program, point-of-purchase marketing material and other valuable tools and assistance.” Riley adds Something Special from Wisconsin™ events are a great way to introduce consumers to Wisconsin products, but many people haven’t connected the dots between a favorite product like a cheese or mustard and a local producer.

“Long-term, I think we all want the same thing----to see more products from Wisconsin on the shelves,” he explains.

Visually exciting

Get onboard the Buy-Local movement, says Tim Metcalfe, owner of Metcalfe’s Market at Hilldale Shopping Center, Madison. “Consumers are driving the bus,” he says. “We’re doing our best to provide what they’re looking for---that includes fresh, locally produced Something Special from Wisconsin™ products.” Metcalfe’s Market is well known for showcasing the Food Miles Program at the store. Consumers have an instant visual message of how many miles Wisconsin products travel between the farm and grocery store. But Metcalfe points out that not only do consumers want to support Wisconsin farmers and producers, they want to be “more green”….which is why consumers like seeing shorter travel distances, fresher products delivered from growers in the same state. But sometimes making a choice comes down to price. “But we’ve found that when customers want a Wisconsin product, they are willing to pay the price for it. Take California tomatoes. In national ads they may be on sale and less expensive than locally grown tomatoes, but we’re not giving up local sales because of it,” Metcalfe notes. Earlier this spring Metcalfe’s held a Something Special from Wisconsin™ sampling event at the store. “It was extremely successful,” says Metcalfe. “We had over 75 sampling areas and the consumers just loved meeting the faces behind the brands.” What will it take to grow the Something Special from Wisconsin™ program? Metcalfe adds, “The Something Special from Wisconsin™ team and Thrive are a great help in marketing the concept of supporting Wisconsin growing and producers. But even more

retailers have to understand it. When that happens, even more people will get onboard.”

High quality products

Jerry Mountin, owner of Mountin’s Piggly Wiggly in Mayville says by promoting local products you not only help the local economy you differentiate your store over the competition. “When you promote Something Special from Wisconsin™ products your store becomes more of a destination,” says Mountin. Widmer’s Cheese Cellars Inc. of Theresa, Wisconsin is a good example of a niche product that has found a market. Mountin says the company’s high quality products are one of the store’s top sellers. In mid-July it was being advertised as a “Squeal Deal” by the store and Mountin anticipated a lot of attention to it as usual. He projected, “It’s so popular here we anticipate selling one to two tons of Widmer’s cheese this weekend.” On March 3rd this year, Mountin’s Piggly Wiggly hosted a Something Special from Wisconsin™ in-store. Jerry and his wife, Pat, got ready for the event by purchasing red shirts with the Something Special from Wisconsin™ name and logo, and the store’s name on them. “It added to the excitement of the event,” says Mountin. All in all, Mountin says the day was a big success. “We had over 20 demonstrations going on and we sold a lot of products.” Mountin says it’s also very helpful that Something Special from Wisconsin™ works hard to promote Wisconsin products. “They have a very good marketing program,” he says.

Get people talking

Don’t overlook the fact that nostalgia plays a part in providing locally produced fresh products to consumers. Carl Miller, owner of Miller and Sons in Verona agrees. “Many consumers think back to when grocery stores predominantly sold local products and see that model as being the height of freshness and quality.”

Miller says they learned first-hand how motivated people are to buy Something Special from Wisconsin™ products when they’re highlighted at a special event. “The people at Something Special from Wisconsin™ are very helpful. They make it so easy by providing point-of-purchase marketing tools such as the Something Special from Wisconsin™ stickers to put on products.” Miller’s two day event earlier this spring was a big success. He says, “It was an eye-opening experience seeing so many vendors and customers come together. Miller hadn’t realized it beforehand but some of the people doing the demos were customers familiar to the store. Demos of products like Blue Farm Corn Chips and horseradish from Silver Spring foods, were all a big hit. He is enthusiastic about Something Special from Wisconsin™ reaching more people. He says the program isn’t complicated and it’s win-win situation when grocers join the Something Special from Wisconsin™ movement. “In order to grow the momentum even more you have to get people talking about it. Word-of-mouth advertising from both the grocers and consumers will increase awareness and help even more grocers, vendors and consumers get involved, realize sales, and benefits from buying and selling locally produced Wisconsin products.”
