almost chaos
What an amazing Finals for our 10th year; 7 bands on the Catalyst Main Stage competing for over $5000 in cash and prizes in front of hundreds of frenzied, music loving fans. I want to personally congratulate all of the SC bands who participated in this years event; without their hard work and dedication to their craft the Your Music Olympicks would not be possible. I also wanted to thank all of the venues and sponsors we worked with; these are the people aside from the bands themselves that are necessary for local music to continue to thrive here in Santa Cruz.
We started the night off with Almost Chaos; they burst onto the scene in last years YMO Finals, and at an average age of 14 this year, they are still the youngest participants in an SC YMO Finals event. This 3 piece is truly amazing; most bands this young are used to hearing that theyre good for their age, but AC is just good period. Jose is a talented vocalist who also has excellent stage presence and charisma; Derek is already a shreddin guitarist with nowhere to go but up, and Mack (drummer) is the foundation from which each song is built upon. They work well together, and if they can stay together through the ongoing evolution of their music we might all soon be saying I knew them when.
The second band up, Hollywood Scars, is a newer band that specializes in 80s style rock music (with a few covers). Jimmy was our 2010 SC YMO Best Vocalist winner, and his performance was indicative of his talent. Congratulation to

Ryan also, our 2010 SC YMO Best Guitarist Bronze award winner. Once again we see that in the Finals the cream really does rise to the top.
Pariah Faction has strived to make the Finals the last couple of years, and it was great to see their hard work finally pay off. The band has continued to improve every year, and with Morgan as their front man, they have arguably the most critical piece of the puzzle, a talented singer. With the addition of Brian on guitar (our 2009 Monterey Best Guitarist Gold winner) and Gizmo on bass (our 2010 Santa Cruz Best Bassist Gold winner) Pariah Faction has achieved a balanced line-up that will rock out even the most casual listener. Definitely worth a second of your online time.
Although our other 2010 Finalists deserve kudos for getting to the Main Stage and bringin it, the night belonged to Mordor. Congratulations to our 2010 SC YMO Live Performance Gold winners, they worked hard, played harder, and in the end they earned the title. For those of you unfamiliar with Mordor (and they are fairly new to the scene) their brand of hard rock is a little bluesy and more danceable than you might expect. Their music draws the audience in but tends to elicit more smiles than hard looks. I cant wait to watch their continued development in the coming year, and I expect them to build on their current success.
This brings us to Cylinder, our 2008 SC YMO Live Performance Gold winners. With their pounding hard rock riffs and incredible stage performance, Cylinder has continued to impress me with their musical evolution, especially considering how difficult it is for any band to maintain their original line-up. As our 2010 SC YMO Live Performance Bronze winners, they have also been able to

maintain a dedicated fan base through this difficult recession. Congratulations also on the release of their debut album, Fueled by Fire, available now.
On an evening dominated by rock acts, Eliquate brought their unique brand of Hip Hop to the stage, and in my opinion won over numerous new fans. Front man Elliot Wright is a charismatic magnet when on the mic, and thanks to strong support from the audience they were able to win the 2010 SC YMO Live Performance Silver award. Even if youre not a fan of Hip Hop you should check out Eliquate; they won over rock fans at the Finals for a reason. Plus they have hot groupies!
A Band of Orcs was our closer this year, and what a great way to finish our Finals event at the Cat; 4 costumed Orcs (made by the same guy who made the costumes for The Lord of the Rings movies) leading the audience on a Metal march through their music. Very heavy, but very entertaining. Dont be surprised to see these guys play with Gwar in the near future (they like to throw blood and brains on the audience during their shows).
Thank you once again to the bands, fans, venues, and sponsors; without everyone actively participating in the Your Music Olympicks it would not have been possible for us to have achieved 10 years of successful shows here in Santa Cruz. See you next year!

maintain a dedicated fan base through this difficult recession.

YMM: Are you guys all native to the Sacramento Area? Justin: Were all over the place, and we kinda consider ourselves an East Bay band, but we love Sacramento. Is it kinda hard to get all of you guys together? Justin: We still practice twice a week in our studio in Concord; its somewhat centralized but we can leave all of our gear there so its less hassle. YMM: Especially for you, the drummer, hauling your gear back and forth twice a week, Im sure you have a good size set. Justin: Yeah, I got a pretty big rack. Chris: Hes got a big rack! YMM: Watch out ladies! How long has the troupe been going on? Justin: We just had our two year anniversary, so the band started in August in 2008. We started the first year just writing songs and building a relationship with each other. So when it came to playing shows we already had about an hour set. YMM: Nice! When the first show came around you guys already had enough for a full length. Justin: Yeah, right now we have about twelve songs, but weve had some songs come in and out. YMM: Does the band have any releases right now? Justin: We have a six song EP. We just released it and its available on iTunes. Ed: Amazon and Napster. Lloyd: Whats the name of it? Justin: Eternus, Vires, Patientia. Translates from Latin to Eternal Strength and Endurance. YMM: Nice, bringing out the Latin. Talented and educated. Justin: I just translated with Google. YMM: For all members being spread out, where do you guys generate the most shows? Justin: East Bay and Sacramento. We love playing up in Sac. Weve played at Marilyns and we have a show at Distillery coming up. YMM: Having a chance to play all around Northern California, do you feel that the metal vibe is stronger in certain areas? Chris: I feel that its stronger in Sac...thats why we like playing in this area. YMM: What are the bands plans for after the YMO show? Justin: Yeah, actually we have a really critical show coming up on October 15th at the Mutiny in Antioch. Its a showcase for Kim Stevens, who is a rep for Capitol Records. Tickets are $10 and youll see five really good bands. You can buy tickets on our website. Lloyd: Whats the website? Justin: www.prevailrocks.com. And the EP is available online or were selling it at shows for $5. Were excited about it, man, its the best Ive ever sounded on a record. Chris: All two of em. YMM: As long as its better, thats all that matters! Cool guys, thanks a lot.

CUBAN CIGAR CRISIS
YMM: Are all of you from San Francisco?Chaz: No. Well I am from the peninsula; Steve here is from Australia, and...Jason: I am from the Central Valley. YMM: So, what is the Cuban Cigar Crisis? Whats your sound/style?Chaz: What do we sound like? I think we are still figuring that out. We are in the process of gearing up to record a country single. A seven-inch country single. It should be out later in the year. We sound like a lot of different stuff, but we are Rock n Roll group for sure.YMM: How does a seven-inch country album play into your Rock n Roll group?Chaz: We are a little country, we are a little rock n roll, what can I say? I think that they blend well. YMM: Do people like the sound of the Cuban Cigar Crisis? Chaz: Yeah, they love it.YMM: How is it finding places to play in San Francisco?
Chaz: It is a cool music scene up here. I think that with the downturn in the economy there are some interesting things going on with trying to make clubs and venues work, so some other places are opening up for musicians. Jason: Like the Element Lounge.YMM: I know you said that you were working on a country album, but do you have any other material or CDs available?Chaz: Yeah, we do and you can find them all on iTunes; search for the Cuban Cigar Crisis. YMM: What is the name of that album?Chaz: The last one was called Sourpuss and the one before that was Flags of Discontent. YMM: Do those CDs follow this new album style of country rock?Chaz: Oh no. They are quiet different to where we are now.Website: cubaincigarcrisis.com, MySpace.

Interview with The Paper SonsBy: Numerous
YMM: Welcome to the Your Music Magazine interview with The Papersons lead singer Tom McCullough. How are you doing Tom?Tom: I am doing good.YMM: So I hear you guys are working on a new CD?Tom: We are actually working right now in Mike Wells at Mike Wells Mastering. We are finish-ing up the last six tracks. We are planning on dropping that whole album late February, and it is going to be called In The Throes YMM: What made you come up with that title?Tom: Well, it has been a tough year. At certain points it was hectic but that was when we were the most creative. Even in that chaotic state, we were able to pull through it and came up with songs that have that feeling. YMM: What has been the most challenging part of the album?Tom: The most challenging aspects were shift through certain songs; finding out which were better for the concept of the album. Gener-ally it went pretty smooth. There were not too many difficulties, maybe tightening up at the end while trying to pick up the pace. But I think we came up with a good product. YMM: Have you put out any demos or EPs?Tom: Yeah, we have put out two demos. The first one was Fine Line, and the sec-ond called Underground. We are actually mastering those five tracks and going to re-release those too. All of that should be out by early January. YMM: How has In The Throes different from our other work?
Tom: A big part of it was the contrast like the Deftones. We try to have a heavier low end guitar style, stronger beats, and I kind of even it out a little bit smoother with the voice. We try to have a soft and hard contrast. YMM: Kind of a tension release?Tom: It is a little more common response. We have metal fans of the group, and a lot of al-ternative fans. It varies among tracks but we do want to carry the hard and soft all at once. YMM: Is this your first time working with Mike Wells Mastering ?Tom: It is our first time mastering with Mike Wells (mastered Sound Tribe Sector Nines Peace Blaster). And so far so good. He is a big metal fan so we have his expertise there with the heavier side. We also recorded with Willy Samuels at Nu Tone in Pittsburg (Green Day, Iggy Pop, Dead to Me). They are fair ac-quainted with each other, so it has been go-ing really smoothly and the mastering is going well. It has been handled quite professionally. It is really hard to find the perfect people to do the right thing, and the stars are a lining here, so we really lucked out. YMM: How do you feel your songs differ from being recorded to being played live?Tom: Well, that is what we try to capture. Re-cording is a very intense process, but we have practiced on how that live performance is go-ing to sound. And in the end, the live perfor-mance is where you want to be. It is defiantly more intense in the live show. YMM: Do you guys have any shows coming up?Tom: We will be playing the Your Music Olym-picks Finals January 15th. After that we dont have anything lined up specifically. But we do plan to have a tour in the spring of 2010.YMM: Is that to promote the release of the new album In The Throes?Tom: Yeah. We are having the CD release, we hope, in late February. Then we will have some shows after that, followed by the tour in the spring.YMM: In October you signed with Minus Head records, how has it been working with them?Tom: It has been great; Bret Hardie is the head of the record label. He has been influ-ential, and a good producer for this. He has a good ear for the music we want to play. He is very business-like. It has just been really great. YMM: With the release of the new album, any fears about internet piracy?Tom: I hope that people would steal it if they like it that much. At this level we would be honored to have people want to take the mu-sic. It is a matter of getting out there at this point. You can find us on our websiteswww.thepapersons.com and MinusHead .com. After much anticipation, the San Francisco Your Music Olympics finals went off without a hitch this Friday at Club 6 (60 6th street, 6th and Mission). Six bands competed for the top three slots and a chance at $5,000 worth of cash and prizes. None of this would have been possible had it not been for the support of our sponsors: Epiphone Guitars, Doja Clothing and Noisy Planet. One Punch Machine Gun received the Bronze, earning them a membership to Noisy Planet.net and a brand new Epiphone Prophecy SG Custom EX (for those of us who speak guitar this is a stallion of an instrument.) The Silver medal winner, The Paper Sons, walked away with a membership to Noisy Planet.net, a black and white half-page ad in Your Music Magazine and a new Epiphone Prophecy Futura Custom Ex, (very, very nice... to put it simply.) And the grand prize Gold medal, which included $1,000 in cash, an Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy Custom Ex, an Epiphone Thunderbird Pro IV Bass, a color half-page ad in YMM and a membership to NoisyPlanet.net, went to San Francisco hard hitters, Company Car.
First off, Club 6 is an independent artists dream come true. Aside from recent expansion of the club, the Dark Room (the location used for the finals) is set up with a stage that faces the bar directly; patrons can enjoy a drink and the show simultaneously, and not have to choose between booze and music (because we all know how well those two work together). With the crowd in high suspense and amps turned up to 11 band, as SF locals Disgust

of Us ripped up the stage with an awesome acoustic indie-rock mix, that (though I cant describe in words) sounded killer and set the bar high for the remaining acts. The next group to grace the stage was Tokyo Raid, who just released their self-titled album and packed the stage with a fast-pace indie edge that not only rocked sox, but also set the night up well for the next band and Bronze medal winners, One Punch Machine Gun. Next to the stage was our Gold medal winners, Company Car, who packed the house and kept them singing, earning them a slot in the Your Music Olympicks hall of fame. Without loosing any of its momentum, the show continued with Silver medal winners, The Paper Sons, leaving their blood and guts on the stage and keeping the energy alive for the sixth and final act, the heavy-duty nose-breaking energy of SF metal band Ratchet.
All and all, the night was a great success, with this being the first year the contest has graced San Francisco. It was great to know we had the support of all the bands that participated and the fans that made the finals stage as insane as it was. Your Music Magazine would like to thank all our sponsors, as well as the six finalists for enabling a great first year. Be sure to look for all the bands in our up coming issues and keep an eye out for us next year. And remember, it could be your band that walks away with all the glory and prizes.

Shane and Steve came out on February 6th to the Sacramento Your Music Olympicks preliminary show and Guitar Shred Off solo event. Tube Sonic helped Your Music Magazine out with supplying the amp for the Guitar Shred Off event; they also judged the competitors. Six of Sacramentos best guitarists came out to compete in the Guitar Shred Off, with a top prize of an Epiphone Guitar and advertising in Your Music Magazine. Here is a little bit of what they had to say about themselves and the event.
So what do you do at TubeSonic?Shane: We specialize in tube amp repairs for musi-cians. I take more of the technical aspect and Steve takes more of the player aspect of it all. But between the two of us, weve been around since the 80s metal scene and now we run our own tube amp repair shop. Steve: Shane keeps with the old school metal tone, and Im more new school, so we have a kind of high-low relationship that meets in the middle. We can deal with all tones.
Where is Tube Sonic Amps, and are there any brands you specialize in?Shane: We are off Highway 50 (3230 Hogarth Dr, Sac-ramento, CA 95827). We special in tube amplifiers be-cause they have the best tone. Were an authorized ser-vice repair center for damn near everyone that matters. Steve: Mesa, Marshall, Ampeg, Fender. All the good guys. Shane: The reason why most people like us is that we get their amp back to them in a reasonable amount of time. Not two, three, or four weeks.Steve: And we actually play the amps. Well hunt down whats wrong with your amp. Shane is really good at knowing what it should sound like. He knows the techni-cal aspect, and then we know the tones to where we play it and listen to it then play and listen to it. Shane: Ive heard too many guys come in and say fix it so I can sell it, but once they get it back they fall in love again. Were not just a repair shop; we do tone.Steve: You really get that feeling that someone else cares about your tone. Thats where Tube Sonic sets itself apart. You helped judge our Guitar Shred-Off event - how was it?Steve: Sacramento has some great guitarists. Even though there were only a handful tonight, it was hard to judge who the best was. But there were good mu-sicians tonight. Each one got to stand in front of the crowd and play what they wanted to play. Thats what we like to see. Shane: You dont have to be the best, but you do have to get that crowd moving.
