Greetings Tiger Wrestling Fans,
With the last few weeks of summer winding down, the 2010-11 season is right around the corner. We’ve been hard at work so far this offseason as we get ready for the 65th installment of TigerStyle wrestling. I wanted to take a moment and give you all a summer update on the team.
With most of the squad here for the summer to train, we have been working hard with lifting and wrestling to get ready for the summer. We just finished up our last Tiger Style Camp in Georgia, and we had 14 different high states represented in our team camps.
As you can see, our 2010-11 roster is listed to the left, along with their weight classes. Some classes are listed as to be determined, and we’ll get those settled come fall. We’ve got 42 student-athletes on our roster this season, which includes 15 newcomers.
I apologize for not being able to release our schedule yet, but it is expected to be approved in early August. We have put together another challenging schedule, with non-conference meets scheduled against Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Kent State, Lehigh, Rutgers, Maryland, Oregon State and Hofstra. Of course, we’ll also take on the Big 12 opponents, and we once again have The Midlands and National Duals on our schedule.
Don’t forget to mark the annual Welcome Back Picnic on your calendars. This year’s picnic will be held on Saturday, August 21, at Noon (CT) at the Nickell Shelter in Cosmo Park. More information regarding what to bring and where to go is listed on page two. This is a great way to welcome back the returners and meet some of the newcomers to get ready for the upcoming season.
We’re all very excited about the upcoming season and we think you fans will have a lot to look forward to. We recorded our fourth top-10 finish at Nationals last season and hope to build on that success this year. We return three of our six NCAA qualifiers from last season, Todd Schavrien (141 pounds), Dorian Henderson (174 pounds) and Brent Haynes (197 pounds), to go along with the 11th-best recruiting class in the country according to IntermatWrestle.com.
With all of that said, I encourage you to renew your Takedown Club membership and to invite your friends and family to join as well. Your annual donations don’t go unnoticed and are greatly appreciated by everyone within the program.
Looking forward to seeing you this season,
Brian Smith

ellis sigNs WitH ziNkiN eNtertaiNMeNtFormer Missouri wrestler Mark Ellis, the 2009 NCAA Division I heavyweight champ, has launched his MMA career by signing a contract with Zinkin Entertainment. He will be training with American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California.
Zinkin Entertainment is largely considered to be one of the top sports management teams in Mixed Martial Arts. They represent over 30 fighters, including Chuck Liddell, Cain Velasquez and Forrest Griffin.
At AKA, Ellis will be joining fellow former NCAA All-American wrestlers Daniel Cormier and Velasquez. Ellis is expected to be trained by Bob Cook, Javier Mendez and Dave Camarillo.
Ellis becomes the third ex-Tiger wrestler in recent history to make the switch to MMA, as he follows the post-collegiate success of former Missouri wrestlers Michael Chandler, Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren.
