ICNP® Version Beta2 - efforts
The official ICNP® Beta2 translation was performed as a consensus made by nurses and associated experts from Germany, Switzerland and Austria
The first ICN Accredited Research & Development Centre: German Speaking ICNP User Group was launched at Freiburg i. Br., Germany
This centre is close related to the nurses associations DBfK, SBK/ASI, and OEGKV
Since 1999 the homepage of the German Speaking ICNP User Group is available (webmaster R. Widmer)
The SBK/ASI Nursing Informatics Work Group is continuously working on nursing terminologies and with themes related to ICNP®
Since 2003 the official translation of ICNP® Beta2 has been made available by Huber publishers, Swiss
The OEGKV hosted the ICNP working group Austria

Browser and translation tool: BaT-MySQL-database
Realisation based on a MySQL-database Core application has been performed with XML
data files of the ICNP® web browsers version 1.0 with lexically mapped ICNP® beta translation
Hierarchical browsing with ICNP® Version 1.0 Rich fold features supporting search, sort and
filter functions Many features to work on translation, to
comment currently realized steps of work (results) and to discuss issues
A multilingual usage is possible. Currently (12/2006) it is planned to integrate the tool to the official ICNP® translation approach of ICN

Transparency of currently available results For new users it is possible to contribute to the
translation at several starting points Translators are able to evaluate the translation A function to provide remarks and
recommendations supports terminology related discussions
Visualisation of consented translations as well as rejected terms has been realised

Requirements for participation
Knowledge of ICNP® materials Easy and individualised registration is needed
for Wiki and bat-tool just with email based confirmation and registration by web master
Useful basic knowledge to start with respect to technical requirements is recommended: basic knowledge in usage of web-based platforms (like Wikipedia, mailing lists, news groups, chat rooms etc.)
(after registration individualised counselling is possible via ICNP group of core members)
ACENDIO 2007 Amsterdam - L. Portenier - 2007-04-21 21
What means co-working ?
No restricted work schedules: organisation of translation work and work flow is decided on own resources
Concept related translation: e.g. to work on and around the concept and term of „pain“
Axial related translation: e.g. concentrated on physiological terms of axis „body process“
Translation work followed by ICNP® publication
The ICNP core member group will moderate the group of translators an will stress out difficult terms or areas which should be prepared for balloting approaches
ACENDIO 2007 Amsterdam - L. Portenier - 2007-04-21 22
Based on ICIDH-2 Beta-2 field trial study one: translation and linguistic evaluation: Protocol and Supporting Material
Currently (12/2006) no ICN-guideline is available. They will be mentioned as soon as they are published
The internal guideline is obligatory for translation work
Planned realisation of accomplished translation is aimed for spring 2007
Guidelines for translation work
ACENDIO 2007 Amsterdam - L. Portenier - 2007-04-21 23
Guidelines for translation work
Summary of the guideline
General aim: the translation should capture the conceptual equivalence (not word-by-word translation or etymological equivalent only).
Result 1 - Preferred Term: each translated concept of the source language meets only a main translated concept in the target language only. This crucial process will be supported by the ballot approach.
Result 2 - Synonyms: for each translated concept of the source language as many synonyms as adequate could be proposed for the source language. Exception: synonyms are not allowed to change the meaning of the concept. Final decisions for synonyms will be accomplished with the ballot approach.
Result 3 - Suggestion making as options for proposed translations: each translator will be able to provide options for translations of concepts (as many as s/he likes). Group discussions and ballot approach will support decision making.

1st balloting procedure – pre-test
1st evaluation step (important for consensus building): weighing of translations as
preferred term synonyms suggested translation not defined
2nd evaluation step (important for discussions):
certain uncertain
ACENDIO 2007 Amsterdam - L. Portenier - 2007-04-21 26
1st balloting procedure – pre-test
3rd evaluation step: assessment and final decision-making:
Concept is equivalent within target language and source language
Concept has a reduced meaning in the target language Concept has an expanded meaning in the target language Concept causes different terms within target language
(e.g. it differs between German language in Swiss and Austria)
The distinction between two concepts get lost in the target language
Concept is translatable into target language, but differs from source language
Concept is untranslatable, no equivalence in target language available
ACENDIO 2007 Amsterdam - L. Portenier - 2007-04-21 27
1st balloting procedure: pre-test
user translations will be classified according to the
four rating optionsstep 1:
user
similar preferred terms / synonyms will be analysed
feedback to users: 1. preferred term
2. synonym3. modifying (or delete) item
step 3: feedback
distinguishing preferred terms / synonyms will be analysed
user translations will be evaluated according to the
seven criteria
step 2: review (board)

Expected results
Since May 2006 about 20 interested nursing experts out of three countries are participating in the translation work
Further participation will be possible for new members (especially for face validation of ICNP® core concepts as well as catalogue development)
First results will be available in spring 2007: How useful is the technological base for practical
needs? What types of consequences will be drawn regarding
translation and mapping of other international systems of nursing terminologies for use in the German speaking countries?
How could ICNP® Version1.0 be integrated into nursing practice from nursing practitioners views?
Inconsistencies, difficulties and hindrances of the translated classification will be recommended to ICN.
