We at TRIC Tools have specific requirements for the use and maintenance of our equipment with regard to safety and efficiency on the job. Our written and verbal recommendations coincide with safety regulations set by local, state, and national government agencies. Our

clients may have standards over and above industry regulations. However, the safety equipment, apparel, and operating procedures

demonstrated by our clients in this presentation may or may not comply with above mentioned government regulations.

The tool: TRIC model WC22 ram prototype, 19.24 square inch total piston area, developing 48 tons of force at 5,000 psi. (Hydraulic pump used for this job was a Ditch Witch Power 25, producing a maximum of 2,500 psi.)

The task: Replace 115’ of 8” VCP, pulling into 7’ deep manhole with 48” base. Flow exits manhole to right; pull will be upstream through that port. Note wide flow channels.

Consultation: Ward Carter discusses the pull with Andes Construction staff.

Setup: Three 6” x 6” timbers are used. The first (under the one visible) is shorter and set into the floor of the manhole. Cuts are made with a concrete saw to fit the first wood piece flush with floor level and perpendicular to the pipeline to be replaced. Blue arrow shows direction of pull.

Resistance: The second and third timbers are cut as precisely as possible to wedge against the walls of the manhole. Wood spacers thick enough to allow passage of the cable are placed between

the first and second timbers. Note abandoned cut in floor to the right of the pulley wheel.

The ram is lowered into the manhole.

Loaded: Ram fits as closely as possible to opposite wall of manhole, to allow maximum room for bursting head to enter. The slight mounting angle off the pulley base keeps ram away from sloping walls.

Taking aim: A back hoe assists entry of new pipe, and keeps it above traffic by laying it over top of crew truck. Note 8” bursting head in gutter, already attached to cable.

Guided entry: The TRIC large diameter bursting head system allows the mole to slide freely on the cable, which is attached to the head driver and PE driver independently of the mole. Here the mole is

manipulated with a digging bar as pull begins and drivers slide into place before entry.

Contact: Entry is smooth, pulling upstream into running main.

Arrival: Mole slides off drivers easily, and is hauled out of the manhole with a rope. Outlet at base of manhole was enlarged to make room for head to pass through.

Freedom at hand: After removing the mole, the ram is set up again to pull without it, allowing greatest possible penetration of pipe into manhole.

The cut: Drivers, PE cap, and new (grey) pipe enter manhole with room to spare.
