20% of Google Searches Have Never Been Made

Before

Every day there are 6 billion Google searches and 1 billion of them are being typed for the first time ever

How do you market to searches that don’t exist yet?

Long-Form Content.Here’s Why

High quality, long-form content.*Across 20,000 keywords, the average content length for the top ten articles was 2000 words.

Longer articles get more links

Articles by length (longer articles on the left)Links to those articles (many more on the left)

Longer articles build trustMarketing experiments ran a test to see how short-form sales pages compared to long-form ones on the same subject. The result was a 30% increase in conversion for long-form copy.

Searches are getting longerLonger articles are much more likely to fulfill a long-tail search than shorter ones; simply because they have more words to work with.

Google likes new stuffSimply having a more recent date on your article will cause it to outrank the competition…and we already know Google likes longer articles.

What you shouldn’t do with long-form content

Don’t: Get Lax on Quality: Longer does not mean automatically better. If a 1000 word article can be conveyed in 500 words, write it in 500 words. Long-form articles take a lot more effort up front because it’s very difficult to come up with interesting and compelling content that doesn’t contain filler anecdotes and rants.

Don’t: Get Scope-Creep:  It’s tempting to get off-topic with longer articles because of how difficult it is to intelligently fill up thousands of words on a narrow subject. However, if long-form articles do get off-topic their value for driving long-tail traffic is compromised.

Conclusion: The best way to prepare for mystery searches is to create informative, in-depth articles that peers link to and Google loves to rank. When 1 billion people type in phrases that have never been searched before, be the one to help them out.
