December 1, 2209 – Deadline for submissions to the USDA
News. For info: usdanews@usda.org.
December 1, 2009 – Deadline for submissions to the January
2010 issue of The Grapevine. For info: thegrapevine@pergrossi.com.
December 5, 2009 - Deadline for submissions to the January
2010 issue of the Bow and Swing. For info: rgboyd@earthlink.net.
December 6, 2009 – West Coast Membership Christmas Dance
– Corkscrew Woodlands, Estero – Early Rounds 1:30 p.m., Mainstream/Plus/Rounds 2:00 – 4:00
p.m. – Callers: Howard Cole and area callers and cuers – West Coast Members FREE – guests $5
per person. For info: lanceandrita@yahoo.com.
January 15, 2010 – Deadline for Florida Square Dance Hall of
Fame Nominations – Nominees must have a minimum of 10 years statewide
involvement in the Florida Square and Round Dance activity. Their contributions must
encompass the entire state of Florida, not just 1 or 2 areas. This should require unselfish
dedication of time and labor. Being an Area president, Federation president, Caller/Cuer
Association president and/or State Convention chairman is not enough. The Hall of Fame is
seeking individuals or couples whose efforts have affected the majority of the State of Florida.
The fact that one is nominated is a very high honor, whether or not they enter the Hall of Fame.
For info: Dick and Darleen Nordine at rnordine@juno.com.
February 1, 2010 – Deadline for Extra Mile Award
Nominations. To show appreciation to both Callers and Cuers who go beyond the norm
in giving freely of their time and talents to the square dance activity. Nominee must be a
member of the Florida Callers Association or the Round Dance Council of Florida. For info:
rayelsa@aol.com.

Can you believe it?? It’s only 25 days
until Christmas! Where has the year
gone?
Several clubs have sent me their
2009/2010 dance schedules so check
out the Looking Ahead section below for their theme
dances. If your club currently doesn’t have theme
dances, you might get some ideas from these clubs.
People always seem to enjoy theme dances and there
seemed to be more banner raids/retrievals on the
nights there is a special
theme.
This Sunday, December 6th, is our next West Coast Membership
Dance in Estero, which is in southwest Florida just off I-75.
Howard Cole will be the MC and he has several area callers and
cuers lined up for the afternoon. This is your chance to get out
and dance to some new callers and cuers. If you’ve been dancing
for awhile, there may be some callers and cuers that you danced
to back home as there are several retired callers and cuers who
winter in the Ft. Myers area and they call and cue while they are
down here. You can start getting your Christmas outfits out now
so wear them Sunday. Some of the West Coast officers will be
going down the day before so they can visit a local club on
Saturday niht and then go to the dance on Sunday afternoon.
Since this is an afternoon dance, you can take a nice drive down,
dance, have dinner and drive back and still arrive home fairly early in the evening. Hope to see
you there!
There are several clubs planning New Years Eve parties this year. To my knowledge, only
Strawberry Square is requiring advance registrations as they have their meal catered and they
need a confirmed number for the caterer. You can find a copy of the flyer at
www.dancergram.com. You can either mail in your check or drop it off at Strawberry Square
when you’re there for a dance. If you want to sit with a group of people, all of you need to
send in your reservations together.

It’s time to start thinking about who you can nominate for
the Florida Hall of Fame and the Extra Mile Award. The
nomination deadlines and criteria are listed at the beginning
of this newsletter. The nominations require a lot of
information so it would be best to start working on them
now so you won’t be rushed trying to submit them on time.
These nominations are supposed to be a surprise to the
recipients, so I have been trying to collect resumes from
various people with the West Coast Square and Round
Dancers Association and the Suncoast Callers and Cuers
Association to have on file for something like this. These
resumes should have a lot of the information you will need
for the nomination form. If you have someone in mind that
you would like to nominate for either award, please contact me to see if I have received a
resume from them and shortly the West Coast Secretary will also have copies. There are
several people I haven’t received resumes from so I will be “reaching out and touching them” in
the next few days to prompt them to return them to me so we have a complete file.
The Extra Mile Award requirements and nomination form can be found at
http://floridasquaredance.com/images/Extra%20Mile%20Award.pdf. You can contact me for a
Hall of Fame nomination form and I will be happy to mail it to you.

I just read your article entitled 'Partner, Partner, Come Out Wherever You Are!' in the American Square Dance, December 2009 issue. What a great article! I had never thought of using networking for square dancing like I do for business. I'm sure that this article is going to help a lot of people. Keep up the good work. R. Barnes, Minnesota

We just finished the season of Thankfulness as we celebrated Thanksgiving. Now we are
approaching the Christmas season with a Thankful heart. But let us talk to you about another
holiday at this time. It is the celebration of St. Patrick's Day. We can really combine our
thoughts of Christmas and St. Patrick's Day. Think about purchasing a Ribbon for the Shamrock
Swing 2010 for your square dance partner or friends or most of all yourself as a Stocking Gift.
Here are the details of this annual weekend event. March 19 & 20, 2010 the Central Florida
Annual Shamrock Swing will be held in LaHacienda Recreation Center located on 1200
Avenida Central in The Villages. Calling the dance for your dancing pleasure will be Tim
Marriner and Bob Stern. Joining them and adding to your dancing pleasure as they cue the
rounds will be Jimmy and Carol Griffin.

Merry Christmas - Happy Hanukkah

Ken & Sandy Brasfield
Ken and Sandy were married in 1956 and are the proud parents of
four children who have blessed them with 13 grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren. Their lives were devoted to “Y” Indian
Guides, Girl Scouts, Job’s Daughters, Masons, Eastern Stars, Sports
Boosters, United Methodist Youth Fellowship, to name a few.
One Sunday in church in Chesaning, MI, a group of Sandy’s lady
friends, realizing that empty-next was fast approaching, decided
to convince their husbands to do something about it. With a great deal of trickery, they got
them to square dance lessons the next evening. They finished lessons in 1973 with three

squares from the Trinity United Methodist Church and formed the Chesaning Showboaters
Square Dance Club. Ken and Sandy were the first presidents and they served two terms.
In 1983 they moved to St. Petersburg, FL, and started dancing with Mac McDonald and the
Azalea Squares. In 1985 they joined the Left Allemanders and the West Coast Association.
They held several offices in the Left Allemanders, serving as president in 1988-89 and again in
2003. In September 1991, they received the Circle of Service award, and in October 1991 they
were given the Hugh Fultz award.
Ken and Sandy have performed several times for SusanElaine Packer and Bettylee Talmadge.
They danced at the Citrus Bowl halftime show on January 1, 1987 with Larry Gatlin and the
Gatlin Brothers, the Fourth of July Celebration at Disney World in ’87 and ’88 and at Mickey’s
Very Merry Christmas Party.
Since joining the West Coast Square and Round Dancers Association, they have held numerous
positions, serving in all offices, twice as vice-president (’93-’94 and ’06-’07) and as president
(’94-’95, ’07-’08, and ’08-’09). They served on the West Coast Fall Fun Fest Committee as co-
chairman twice and as chairman twice. In 1990, they formed a committee and compiled a
manual to institute the West Coast Save Our Squares (SOS). The book was designed to help
start clubs, officer duties, helping with problems, etc. In 1996 they received the West Coast
Distinguished Service Award.
In 2001, they were presented the President’s Choice Award by Don and Ann Slocum.
Ken and Sandy have been active delegates to the Florida Federation since 1990 and have served
on numerous committees. Ken chaired the committee to revise the Federation nominating
process and chaired the committee to revitalize the Extra Mile Award and has served on
nominating committees several times, most recently in 2008. They have installed Federation
officers a number of times. In 1998 they were elected to the office of Parliamentarian of the
Florida Federation of Square Dancers and served until 2002, retiring as President. They have
attended many national conventions – Memphis, St. Louis, Charlotte and St. Paul – representing
Florida.
They served as advisors for “Dancing’s the Key in 2003” the 49th Florida State Convention. They
were co-chairman for the 54th Florida State Convention “Celebrate in 2008”.
Ken and Sandy also enjoyed several years as square dance campers with Chapter #139 of the
National Square Dance Campers Association (NSDCA).
The greatest distance they have traveled to square dance was to London, England.
