Factors Affecting Solubility
I. OBJECTIVES
1. identify the factors affecting how fast solid solute dissolves; and
2. work honestly on the factors affecting how fast solid solute dissolves.
II. MATERIALS
refined sugar, rock salt, hot water, stirrer, water at room temperature, glasses
III. PROCEDURES
Table 1
Factors Affecting How Fast Solid Solute Dissolves
Which Solute Dissolves Faster?
Refined Sugar
Rock Salt
1. Effect of Stirring
2. Effect of Particle Size
3. Effect of Temperature
a. at room temperature water
b. hot water
c.
4. Nature of Solute
1. Student will mix 1 tsp. refined sugar in the glass of water (room temp.) and stir 5 times. Observe.
2. The same is for the 1 tsp. rock salt. Observe.
3. Prepare the hot and at room temperature water and do the same as mentioned in numbers 1 and 2.
4. Check the box as to which dissolves faster.
Question:
a. Will the solute dissolve more if stirred longer? __________
b. Does the size of the particle of the solute affect the solubility? __________
b.1 Which of the two solutes has a larger particle? __________
c. Does the temperature of the water affect the solubility of the solute? ___________
c.1 Which of the two solutes dissolves faster in water at room temperature? ___________
c.2 Which of the two solutes dissolves faster in hot water? ___________
d. Does the nature or kind of solute affect| solubility? ___________
IV. Conclusion
1. What are the factors affecting how fast solid solute dissolves?
