KIWI quintet The NakedAnd Famous are planningto conquer the world. The indie outfit have alreadytopped the singles and albumcharts in New Zealand . . . andthey want to repeat their successglobally. And they’re off to a blisteringstart after being named in therecent BBC Sound of 2011 poll, which has previously picked outbig names like Adele, 50 Cent,Mika and Ellie Goulding.Singer Alisa Xayalith said:“We’re still getting used to newsfiltering through, being on theBBC list was pretty crazy.“Our single Young Blood hasits own little legs and startedwalking around, it went viral.“People latched on to it on theother side of the world. It’s beenold-fashioned word of mouth butvia the internet.“We didn’t have any push or arecord label, it did its thing andwe just watched it happen, itwas crazy. The best thing is thatpeople are genuinely discoveringnew music.“We look after New Zealandand Australia ourselves.“We’ve always been like that,we paid for the album on ourown and produced it.“We did bring out a couple ofEPs in 2008 on an indie label butwe learnt the ropes and saw it’snot hard to manage yourself.“So we got to the point wherewe outgrew that label and took itinto our own hands.”They recorded Young Blood in

a tiny wee studio tucked under arun-down Bollywood cinema inAuckland. But it didn’t turn the band intocelebrities and that’s somethingthey’re planning NOT to change —despite being massively hyped up.Alisa, 24, said: “There isn’tmuch home-grown stuff here.“When we went to No1 every-one was in uproar as we’re analternative band. It’s usuallyRihanna or Katy Perry dominat-ing but everyone was saying howamazing it was to see a bandthat people believed in up there.“It doesn’t change what we do— it was just a nice surprise.”Another thing that’s stunnedthe band was that they’ve alreadygot a Scots fan base.

FavouriteSome hardy punters travelleddown to see them at a recentone-off gig in Manchester. And shows here next year area definite, after album PassiveMe, Aggressive You is released inthe UK.The band are relocating to Lon-don next year and Alisa said:“I’m itching to see the touringplans for 2011. Our manager isScottish so there’s no way youguys will not be seeing us.“One of our favourite bands is

from Scotland actually, FrightenedRabbit. We’ve been listening tothem for the last few years.“Hopefully we can make ourmark like they’ve done.”Q See thenakedandfamous.com
