Overview O In this lesson, students determine

the financial and environmental cost of some common appliances by measuring their energy consumption with a watt meter. Then, the cost effectiveness of a new refrigerator purchased is evaluated through payback calculations.

Objectives OStudents will be able to correctly

measure the energy consumption of various appliances by using a Kill-A-Watt meter

OStudents will be able to calculate an estimated annual energy cost for common appliances

OStudents will be able to correctly differentiate between energy and power

lift 100g. (a small apple) a distance of 1 meter in 1 second

O Watt-hours- a measure of energy usage; watts × hours of use

O Kilowatts –hours - watt ÷ 1000O Phantom load – the electrical power consumed an

appliance when it is switched off or in standby mode; sometimes called vampire load.
