Happy Fourth of July! Summer is here, ourfantastic 2016 Gem Show is over, and new 2017leadership nominations are here again. Our By-Lawsindicate a nominating committee of five (5) membersshall be selected at the JUNE meeting in the followingmanner. The President shall appoint one, (Linda Chu),the Board of Directors will elect one, (ArmandoPedroza), and the Society shall elect three. The three(3) shall be elected at our JULY 12th meeting fromthe floor. More information on nominations, pleasesee attachment of Article V, Section 2, as amendedeffective January 1, 2010 on nomination procedure.Please be proud and ready to show your commitmentto serve this great organization.

I can’t imagine how fast the last two years havegone by. But many great things have happened andcontinue to grow with membership and new projectsgoing forward. I believe the surrounding communitiescontinue to recognized our presence of over 32 yearsserving La Habra Community. Our Membersanxiously volunteer wherever they are called toparticipate. I want to let everyone of our membersknow how proud I am to have been your Presidentthe last two years.

Traditionally, the month of July and August havebeen dark but this year, your Board of Directorsdecided to hold a meeting in JULY 12th (TUESDAY)which we are doing. Following August 20th,(Saturday) a great picnic is schedule at the Warthen’s(our home). Our address is 15455 Tetley St.Hacienda Heights. Everyone is invited, but mustRSVP by signing at July Meeting. A potluck isscheduled and we will provide meat for BBQ. Alsoprovide fun and a Lapidary Beginners class, mustsign up prior.

This month Loretta Ogden will do a program withmembers making copper bracelets .This is a handson program and should be lots of fun. Anyone whohas jewelry tools,please bring them.

Appreciation in Order

Many times we take our friends and members forgranted. Especially the ones that always do whateverthey are assigned to or just because it’s the right thingto do.

This person is Margie Bush. Margie is ourRefreshman Chairmperson. She is always ready ontime to decorate and set up the table at our monthlyGeneral Meetings. She attends our business Boardmeetings every month and will volunteer wheneverand wherever she is called for. Besides being a longtime member, Margie also volunteers as a Docent atthe La Habra Heritage Museum.

MULTI-CLUB FIELD TRIP TO WRIGHTWOOD

Saturday, July 9, 2016 7a.m. -4:30 p.m.

Lead by: Don Ogden (North Orange County) andMark Nelson (Pasadena)Activity: This trip is both a collecting and aneducational activity. California is highly affected bythe movement of our Earth’s tectonic plates. On thisfield trip we will see dramatic evidence of where theNorth American and Pacific plates collide with eachother. We will visit several locations along the SanAndreas Fault. We will have the opportunity to collectActinolite specimens.Transportation: This trip is suitable for all types ofcars. Due to limited parking at some of the collectingareas, car-pooling and sharing gas expenses isrecommended.Physical Requirements: We will start at anelevation of 860' in San Dimas and reach 5935' atWrightwood. Collecting the mineral specimens ofActinolite, Blue Schist and Dolomite require walkingover uneven stream bottoms. There will be toiletfacilities at Lost Lake (pit toilet) and at our stop atthe Grizzly Café in Wrightwood.Bring: Water, lunch, camera, layered clothing, hat,sunblock and a collecting bag or bucket. Sandwichesmay also be purchased at the Grizzly Café.RSVP: With the fire activity this summer wildernessclosures are a possibility. 8:00 a.m. Depart for San Andreas Fault sitesalong Old Route 66 in the CajonPass.From San Dimas: 210 West;15 North, exit Keenwood,left under Freeway toCajon Blvd. (old 66).

9:00 a.m. Visit Lost Lake, a seismic fault sagpond. Pit toilet available.

10:00 a.m. Collecting Actinolite in areas east ofWrightwood along Lone PineCanyon Road. Time permitting, wewill stop at an old Dolomite mine.

12:00 p.m. Stop at Grizzly Café 1455 StateHighway 2 in Wrightwood.Restroom and to-go sandwiches areavailable here.

1:00 p.m. Arrive at Highway 2 Actinolitecollecting area for lunch andcollecting.

3:00 p.m. Depart for our return drive to SanDimas or home.

4:00p.m. Back at meeting place in San Dimas.

Visit thesag pond as it is on the fault.10. 0.1 mile - cross under power lines. The fault ison the left and will remain there until we get toWrightwood.11. .02 mile - asend scarp. The white, tan, andpink Cajone Valley Formation is straight ahead.12. 3.2 miles - intersection of Swarthout CanyonRd. and Lone Pine Canyon Rd. Turn left.13. 5.3 miles - two bright white cliffs of heavilyfractured marble-dolomite are visible about 50yards to the right. The marble was once minedfor cement. The marble can be collectedhere. Just below the ICY sign greenPelona Schist outcrop on the left.

1. Take CA-210 E to I-15 N.2. Exit I-15 N at Kenwood Turnoff and go under fwy to old Hwy 66 (Canyon Rd).3. 1.4 mile - to Blue Cut marker. It was namedafter the Mesozoic Pelona Blue Schist. Theschist can be collected across the road atthe foot of the dark cliffs.

4. 0.2 mile - the fault crosses the road where thescarp on the right slopes down to road level.Leaving the Pacific Plate and entering the NorthAmerican Plate.

5. 0.6 mile - turn left on Swarthout Canyon Rd.

14. 1.6 miles - cross the diversion channel forSheep Creek Canyon debris flows.Just ahead , the fault crosses through the intersection of Lone Pine Canyon Rd. and Sheep5. 0.6 mile - turn left on Swarthout Canyon Rd.Creek Rd. End - Go to Grizzly Cafe.
