AdventAdventAdventAdvent In the night sky in the Southern Hemisphere, the four central stars of the Southern Cross shine permanently above us. From ancient times, these stars offered travellers and ocean navigators who looked up to them, a sure sense of direction, the way to true south. So also as Christians, we look to the cross of Jesus and the light of His resurrection to
offer us a true bearing for our lives: the Way, the Truth, the Life.

ST. PAUL’S & ST. CATHERINE’S NOTICES
Palms Australia: Communities in East Timor, PNG and Kiribati are asking for educators, health professionals and trades people to mentor their local personnel. Their aim is sustainable poverty reduction through self-reliance. They have asked Palms Australia to recruit, prepare and support those who volunteer. In appreciation of any who undertake this mission in 2017 the church also offers considerable financial support. Applications must close very soon. Please email palms@palms.org.au
or call Christine on 02 9560 5333 now to learn more about this wonder-
ful opportunity.
Bread Ministry Roster: Because of some changes in personnel, we need more physically able people to help with the Bread collection at Baker’s Delight on Thursday nights at 7:30pm The
more we have the better. It means you may be rostered about five times during the six month
period. If you can help with this ministry, please give your name to the Pastoral Associate at your
Mass and I will contact you. Thanks Chris Pearson.

St Vincent de Paul - East Bentleigh, Bentleigh & Moorabbin—Christmas Tree Appeal
We are well underway in our preparations to collect goods for Christmas hampers
which we distribute to those we have visited during the year, as well as other needy
families. A Christmas tree will be placed at the back of each Church this weekend with tags
for gift suggestions. Store Vouchers and movie tickets (which can also be purchased at a
cheaper price at some newsagents) are ideal, as they are suitable for most ages, singles and
families. We are also asking for donations of Christmas fare to fill the hampers, e.g. tins of
ham, soft drink, cans of fruit, sweets, chocolates, Christmas cakes, biscuits etc. Maybe next
time you are at the supermarket you might be able to purchase an extra item. Please do not
wrap the gifts, as this makes it easier to allocate to a hamper. We only give new gifts at this
time of year. Donations and gifts will need to be left by Mon. 12th December.
Thank you for helping to make this a special time for those in need.

One of the consistent themes in Matthew’s Gospel is to reveal Jesus as the long awaited Messiah. Matthew gives the evidence which is before their eyes, yet John queries it. John is praised by Jesus as the greatest of the prophets and yet for all his greatness John had not perceived the reign of God in Jesus.
We belong to the group of those called ‘the least’. We are living after the death and resurrection of Jesus and have this advantage over John. However, like John we can miss the miracle of God’s presence in the busyness of our lives.
Meditation Who are the great influencers – people who have made a difference? How do I recognise Jesus in the events and actions of my life? In what ways am I called to continue the actions of Jesus in the world today?
Prayer As Christmas grows closer day by day, help us Lord, to be ready to welcome you, grow strong in our faith, and reveal this joy to others through our words and action. Lord Jesus, Light of the world, make us one in the joy of Christ, today and forever. Amen.
Action This week, find ways to be ‘good news’ to others, especially those who are sick or alienated or marginalised.
Think about contributing to St Vinnies Christmas Appeal.
Think about being actively involved in our Christmas Liturgies. Sign up!
Advent invites us to be more perceptive, and to take time out to see the presence of God with us – to look within our own lives, our families, our workplaces, our neighbourhoods, and recognise the sure signs of God’s presence.

1 Month Remembrance
This Sunday’s Gospel: Matthew 11: 2-11 John in his prison had heard what Christ was doing and he sent his disciples to ask him,
‘Are you the one who is to come, or have we got to wait for someone else?’ Jesus
answered, ‘Go back and tell John what you hear and see; the blind see again, and the lame
walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised to life and the
Good News is proclaimed to the poor; and happy is the man who does not lose faith in me.’
As the messengers were leaving, Jesus began to talk to the people about John: ‘What did
you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No? Then what did
you go out to see? A man wearing fine clothes? Oh no, those who wear fine clothes are to
be found in palaces. Then what did you go out for? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and
much more than a prophet: he is the one of whom scripture says: Look, I am going to send
my messenger before you; he will prepare your way before you. I tell you solemnly, of all
the children born of women, a greater than John the Baptist has never been seen; yet
the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is.’
