Shift in Education

What the research tells us??

The internet and access to it (devices) is now…• challenging traditional approaches to how we learn.• challenging our assumptions about classrooms and

teaching.• challenging our assumptions about knowledge,

information and literacy.

What are the implications for our school?

What the research tells us…

• Student attendance increases and students are more motivated and more engaged (Russell, 2004, New

Brunswick, 2004-06)

• Students write more, more often and better. (Silvernail,

2004, Warschauer, 2005)

• Overall improvement in test scores (New Brunswick, 2004-06 +)

• Students engagement in critical thinking, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking on a task increased with 1-to-1 students; more willing to address/assess controversy within an assignment (Rockman, 1998)

What the research also tells us…• Increase in 21st century learning skills – including multimedia

engagement, greater quality/quantity of writing, multiple/deeper

investigation of information (Warschauer, 2005)

• Motivation, engagement, independent work, interaction, and class

preparation/participation of students with disabilities improved(Harris, 2004)

• As digital confidence grows, and teachers are more ambitious…

◦ More students are accessing more mathematics in deeper ways.

◦ Students explore new dimensions of accessing new knowledge

◦ Students are more engaged in in-depth research (Warschauer, 2004)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring in a different tablet (Samsung) or a laptop/netbook?

FNPS has made a commitment to move forward using Apple products. This was done after lengthy consultation with department and industry consultants. Security and the integrity of our system is paramount to FNPS and we feel that iPads & Mac Pro Laptops satisfy this commitment. We also understand that we need to consolidate all our different platforms operating at the school. This will help with security, training of teachers, and the total integration of ICT in the daily classroom practise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child use computers ‘too much’ for

schoolwork?

• Will compliment the existing school curriculum by

providing appropriate digital learning tools

• Students will use 1:1 devices where they serve a

purpose

Wireless access will allow for ‘just in time’ learning.

Students will be able to use their files at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can 1:1 devices improve learning?

• With greater access to real-time information, digital learning resources, educational software and collaborative workspaces, students demonstrate a higher level of motivation and engagement in their learning.

• Typically students experience initial improvement in areas such as organisational and technological skills, revision, writing and editing work. With the development of presentations and other multimedia projects, students experience improvement in analytical, presentation and speaking skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can 1:1 devices improve learning?

• Increased levels of learning both in and out of

school with an emphasis on higher-order thinking,

creative thinking and expression.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will 1:1 devices be used in the classroom?

• Staff and students will collaborate and use the

device as a tool that develops the student as a

information seeker, analyser and evaluator,

problem-solver and decision-maker. They will

use programs to create ways in which to communicate

their findings and become publishers of their own work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about handwriting?

• Students will continue to use paper and pen

and work to improve their handwriting as well

as use the keyboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Won’t students be able to ‘cheat’ by using the

spell checker?

The spell checker is a tool to allow students

immediate feedback on the correct spelling of

words they use. It supplements our existing

spelling program, but does not replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if students play on the devices during the

school day instead of going outside for recess?

The devices will provide additional support for

student learning, and therefore students will be

supervised as they would be for any learning

activity. The issues of screen limits, supervised

internet use and best academic uses will be covered

by our school’s Acceptable Use Agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will the school ensure the program is

implemented to the highest level?

• Development of policies and guidelines

• Increase in personnel in IT support

• Increase in computer infrastructure throughout the

school

• Ongoing professional development for staff

• Staff replacing current laptops with Mac computers

Frequently Asked Questions

What about safe internet use?◦ Internet service within the DEECD network is closely

monitored by a filtering system which allows for inappropriate content blocking by a regularly updated of categories and sites. This does not apply to use of devices outside of the school network.

◦ A specific policy has been developed which parents and students will be required to sign.

However, it is important that teachers, students and

parents share the responsibility to ensure safe and

responsible use of devices at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the student files on the device be private?

Students can expect their device to be periodically

inspected and monitored for appropriate usage.

School personnel may request access to the

browser history and/or caches as well as any and all

files belonging to the student resident on the

computers as well as stored on the school servers.

Students and parents need to be aware that files

stored are not private.

Frequently Asked Questions

What software will be on the devices?

A comprehensive and high-quality software list

will meet the needs of students over the life of

the device: however schools and students may

load additional software if appropriate and only

through the school’s computer technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can students install their own software?

• Permanent changes such as engraving, marking,

painting or drawing will not be permitted as the

devices remain the property of the school.

• Students will be able to personalise the software interface and background.

• Software can be installed where the software is appropriate and the student holds the appropriate license.

• Software can only be installed by the school technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about flat batteries?

Students are expected to charge the device

overnight and to bring it fully charged to school

each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

The school monitors usage at school, but who

monitors it at home?• That is the responsibility of the parents. When

off school grounds, parents have full authority

to monitor device usage such as:

Encourage use in a family room and not in the bedroom

Restrict use at certain times of the evening and weekend

Examine the documents and other contents of the device

Frequently Asked Questions

How can students access the internet from home?

Home internet connection is not supplied by the

school or DEECD. If there is an existing interne

provision at home, the laptop is able to be

configured for access.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen to my child if they do not

have their own laptop?

Students will continue to have access to the

netbooks/laptops at school but will not be able

to take them home. Access will be as it

currently is – students/classes will be timetabled

for usage.
